Nintendo Stock Doubles In Last Few Months, Now Bigger Than Sony
That's been going on since the GameCube era, and probably even earlier when compare to PS1 and Genesis
definitely since the N64 era at least. the N64 suffered from a lack of third party support and a lack of certain genres (RPGs), things the PS1 had in spades. in terms of content, the PS1 was more of a spiritual successor to the SNES than the N64 was, having final fantasy games that were getting incredible amounts of hype, loads of fighting games that looked just like the arcade, and even its own metroid game in the form of castlevania: symphony of the night. the N64 basically survived on sheer quality alone. it took games like mario 64 and ocarina of time to keep it afloat.
So Xbox-style in terms of thumbstick layouts, I assume. Also, didn't the Gamecube have 3 shoulder buttons; left trigger, right trigger, Z-targeting? A strange number by modern controller standards, since you usually have two shoulders and two triggers on the modern layout. Also, concerning the face buttons...

Yeah, those seemed kinda strange too; but did they work well for the time?
Also the next DS style of Nintendo handheld should probably have the twin-sticks.
The philosophy behind the face buttons was that you always had your thumb on one button in particular, so they made the main button bigger and, by having the other buttons around it, made it easier to press buttons faster, or also make it so they could press more than two buttons easily. i think they worked well. i don't particularly remember having issues with the controls but it might be possible that for some games they didnt work out that well. maybe.
one big thing i heard that they were confused about was whether or not they should have a dpad. apparently the addition of the dpad was very last minute because most devs who worked on the gamecube said it wouldn't have it.
most people said that the Wii U Pro controller is perfect aside from
1. no analog triggers (these got removed from everything nintendo's made since the gcn controllers because they were never used much in gamecube games)
2. the face buttons are too close to the sticks

A special DVD player that could play specialized games that ended up Dead on Arrival. They wanted to use it for more interaction and functionality with movies, but only 4 movies ever truly used it.
I'm really skeptical about whether I'm going to enjoy the new smash bros because of no gamecube controller compatability and because of how terribly clumsy the new controller feels because of the awkward button placement
If it didn't have such retarded joystick placement on the controllers it would be perfect
The WiiU tablet is by far the best controller I've ever had the honor to use
its so fucking comfy

get a pro controller
... also make it so they could press more than two buttons easily. i think they worked well.
the only problem would be trying to press x and b at the same time.
though it may be as awkward to press x and b on the xbox, you at least didnt have a chance of pressing in 3 at a time.
I came across a post on some forum of some guy throwing the biggest shitfest of a tantrum about the 3ds and how it's going to flop in a month or two and will destroy nintendo like the dreamcast did to sega

Nice to see Nintendo doing well.

Still doesn't change that it has terrible joystick placement, it's one of the most inconvenient controllers I've ever used.

Agreed. I just wish there was a way of using it on the PC without web server shenanigans.
Good, they release awesome products, I fucking love my 3DS and the games for it, those are pretty much the only things keeping me sane when I go underway.

Anyone else remember that hilariously obvious TF2 ripoff for a few years ago?
I was recently talking about Nintendo with a friend, and the deep shit they seem to be in. He said that he expected Nintendo to branch out to the mobile device market within a year or so. "Either you see Mario on the iPad in the next twelve months, or Nintendo's fucked."
If you think about it, the casual mobile market does seem right up their alley.

I played it, and it was pretty fun.
There's a saying here that goes 'Better a good rip off than a shitty original'.
Nintendo isn't in as much deep shit as people seem to think they are.
The thing about Nintendo is that unlike companies like Microsoft or EA, they're not constantly interested in nothing but profit. They basically laid the foundations for the videogame industry, introduced a shitload to the medium through their own significant releases, and they made a lot of money because their products were good. They have their priorities in order, and it will always work out for them because they care about the artform.

It's also the controller that has perhaps started the egregious awful thing which we see even on the PC today.
Press "A" for awesome.

I wouldn't say it was the Gamecube Controller's fault. That's more the fault of Resident Evil 4 in general.

Nintendo isn't really "fucked." If they went with more powerful hardware and were selling badly like they are now, then they'd be fucked. I can't speak for the profitability of the Wii U hardware itself, but Nintendo's business model involves selling their hardware for a profit rather than for a loss, but they also want to keep the hardware cheap and affordable. They priced the way they did the 3DS based on the hype it was getting before its launch, but obviously that ended up not working as planned. But when they priced the 3DS below the Vita a few months before that launched, everything (sort of) worked out. While with the Wii U, just buying one game with the system = a profit for them. Who knows how much of a loss their taking with it but it must not be that bad if they dropped the price in the US.
Mario on iPad or Android will diminish the value of the hardware and the games they offer so that's not going to solve anything. Mario on smartphones in general is a stupid idea because of the way most smartphone platformers work vs console platformers where there's physical buttons you actually press. The smartphone "buttons" cover most of the screen and it'd be essentially a battle for real estate on the screen itself, and for platformers, you really can't be making those compromises just to have your game play well (unless it's an autorunner.) Especially with the way Mario platformers are designed, where a lot of the jumps and enemy placement all sort of mathematically make sense and isn't just full of random objects placed around randomly.
You can say "oh but there's controllers you can buy on smartphones for games" but how many people actually buy these things? It must not be that big considering Square Enix's iOS games don't support the controllers at all, meanwhile there's a ton of piracy on Android and there's a ton of games on the iOS app store that aren't on the Android app store. Would having to throw out years and years of game design philosophy be worth it? Probably not. Plus, Nintendo wouldn't want to give up their cut of the profits to Apple. They've always been pretty harsh businessmen about whether or not they can have full control of their platforms and the profits from them. Just look at SNES Playstation debacle where Sony wanted most of the profit and the ability to make their own exclusive SNES system that could play it's own games without the need of an SNES.
I wouldn't say they're fucked, but this practice that they've done where they have to show developers how to actually use the console itself lends itself to an eventual self destruction.

We have to eventually wait for the first party games to finally wear themselves out or jump the shark. Metroid did that with Other M, Mario's done it several times but they keep bringing it back for some reason.
Christmas is a brilliant time of year for Nintendo. Especially with the release of the cheap as fuck 2DS i'm sure hundreds of thousands of those things sold along with 1-2 games along with that.
It's like the perfect present for a kid that enjoys games.
Okay, so it's not just the China thing, but also because of the fact that they release their Q3 results in a few weeks or so. (Which also means there might be a big Nintendo Direct for a press release.)
Some people are saying they're going to talk about Smartphones, hence why interest is rising. Keep in mind that for months they've been saying they weren't going to release any of their games and only have interest in mobile as a way to advertise their products. They've also said that they had big plans in terms of what they were going to do with their services, such as Miiverse and being able to buy games from mobile/your computer. (The 3DS and Wii U both currently support downloading and installing games through SpotPass, so you can have the game ready for you to play while you're at work or doing something while either system is on standby.) Currently, Miiverse is only accessible through the browser and not through it's own app. While the Nintendo eShop on mobile/computer hasn't been talked about much lately. The linked account system was added last update on the 3DS and Nintendo was adding the framework for that stuff for months over the last few updates to the 3DS and Wii U with continual improvements on the way. So this investor briefing is going to involve some kind of talk about their mobile strategy and also maybe some talk on their strategy for China, however, who knows if they'll be ready to announce anything for that. They seemingly have to set up stuff, such as a new branch for China (ie NoA, NoE, NoAus, NoSK) and hire translators to localize the games into Chinese, unless they decide to just go with the people they worked with for iQue.
And then the other thing they've gotta announce is their Wii U and 3DS Strategy for the year. They've already announced a few games for the first 3 months on both systems, but there's still some stuff that hasn't been talked about.
I just hope they announce that they're going fix thee hope thing about eShop purchases being tied to both the console and Nintento ID account. Why purchases are tied to both is beyond me.
Purchases tied to both means that if one person buys games on the console, everyone who has a user on that console can play the game.
It's pretty useful for me because I live with people and sometimes the kids want to play games, but I don't really like letting people on my account or anything (especially if it's to play online) so I have separate user profiles set up so that the kids can play whatever they want, and they can have their own saves too.
The one thing is that they have to figure out what they're going to do in this case when you finally can move accounts to a console on your own, because there's always the risk of upsetting people if features get removed, and this one is especially useful. I've heard that Sony has it so that you can make it so that up to 3 consoles can be tied to an account and that you can remove the ability for those consoles to have access to licenses. With XBL, I don't remember this being a feature and I've never been in a situation where I had to sign in through someone else's Xbox so I wouldn't know anything about that.
