Sounds like BP is in need of some dome improvement.
I'm not a construction expert, but I can't see how concrete could possibly hold up to the stress at that depth. Wouldn't it be safer to just use some kind of metal, and then when that's in place, cover it in concrete?
I still don't understand why we can't just light the damn thing on fire.

Concrete could hold because it's not a closed box. Water inside it was at the same pressure as water outside, so nothing happened. If it was just a hollow concrete box it would probably break a bit.

Nothing like 100 year oil fire.

They've been doing that for a week and a half now. The well is constantly leaking. Nothing is stopping the oil reservoir from emptying out into the gulf.
800,000 litres a day? And i thought there was a shortage of oil.
A good solution would be not to let the oil rigs explode in the first place.

Happen to have a free time machine? Mine's due to be within commission within the next 100 years.
What's so hard to go with the russian way?
See how the Dome thing is working with Czhernobyl? 50 years and it's falling apart. What do you think how long the dome would last over 1000m deep under the water
No.
Giant domes fix everything. I don't give a fuck what your article says. Go check it again. It's working. It's a giant dome. It has to work.
Work? I hate work
You would have thought they would have more safety mechanisms rather than one valve. A nuclear power station has 3 types of every possible safety system, and the environmental damage is arguably similar.
Rednecks fixed this already.

thats pretty cool.
We should try clogging the hole with Dave mustain and axle roses egos.
Dave would like a word with you :colbert:
Why can't they just block it? Haven't been keeping up with this. I assume since they can lower a giant dome thing onto it they can lower something to block it.
So...
What happens when the oil pressure lifts up what blocks it?
They should try sending a team of astronauts down.
yes, let's send people trained for going into space into the oil-filled ocean in order to do... something
???

yes, let's send people trained for drilling oil from beneath the ocean into space to do... something
???
This is why you don't leave it to oil companies to fix the environment. :downs:
oil companies fixing the environment: the ULTIMATE contradiction

Ah yes, a bunch of rural people are smarter than the nations top chaps.
I am disappointed.

That's the joke.
Bad day for oil. Reminds me of the Exon and the Three Mile Island Incident.
What I just don't get is that why do these people still go for oil.

Don't be silly.

Sickening, disheartening, should have never happened.
There were not the appropriate safeguards in place, and heads should roll over this one.
