I once waited 8 hrs in ER just to get evaluated and prescribed penicillin, ended up paying 60 dollars for one of the most abundant meds in the first world but yeah gg.
Fucking hell, 8 hours? NHS trusts get fined every time a patient breaches a 4 hour waiting period in A&E, 92% of patients are evaluated and a care plan decided on in 4 hours, which is actually considered pretty bad, it used to be even higher.
Of course this is following normal triage paths - in a trauma, the ambulance or helo calls ahead and we can have the CT scanner cleared, lift to helipad prepped and a trauma team, including anaesthesia, surgery, x-ray and other specialities ready the second the patient arrives. The HEMS docs can send straight to CT if necessary, and do the handover while the patient is being scanned and images hot reported by a radiologist.
I don't know much about EpiPen usage but how often are they needed? You get an allergic reaction and you use it and it is spent or does it have several doses? Either way that is way too much for something so important.
1 time use that should be followed up with benadryl and an albuterol treatment
Why is this shit legal? No excuses, this is disgusting and I don't even live in the US.
I'd suggest to you Americans that you organize big fucking protest revolving around this issue. Because if you don't, it will get only worse in future.
i work with kids whose ability to survive a bee sting or close contact with any nut containing product depends solely on having an epipen in vicinity. thankfully most of epipen costs are covered by national tax paid medical support for those with severe allergies and chronic diseases.. imaging having to buy an epipen for your home, your car(s), your cabin, your kid's school, your kid's after school club, one to take to football training, each year, for over 300 dollars a piece???
When it comes to protecting your family or children people will do anything, I imagine most people are just going to steal Epipens now
And some people are surprised to hear that medical expenses are the #1 reason for bankruptcy in the US:

If they're surprised, they don't live in America. You can't watch a cable program without hitting a medical claim lawyer commercial, usually conveniently followed by a bankruptcy hotline commercial.

Seems neat. Wondering if there's a sort of anti-statistic to compare to that, like for how many people who can pay for their medical expenses choose to use insurance
What the fuck?
Epipens are essentially free in UK schools, in my old school there was a designated box where they were kept just incase?

Welcome to America.
I have a deliberating disease that makes everyday life stressful as fuck for me, I was hardly able to operate since age 8. Doctors kept redirecting me and issuing medication that did fuck all but costs my family dearly. It took 7 FUCKING YEARS till I got a Doctor who cared to treat it properly instead of sending me around the State to siphon off on my struggling families already overbearing debts.
Only in america is it cheaper to assassinate CEOs than buy a years worth of epi pens.
It'll happen eventually, it's inevitable.
In the UK the same thing cost me about £30. I was £7 for two X-Rays.
Honestly all of the horror stories I hear from people over US healthcare makes me question if the USA can even be considered civilised in the same way as Western Europe.
I don't go to a dentist often at all. I could have paid for dental insurance for the last 10 years and it would have cost more (Though just some every month instead of all at once) than I paid when I actually did go, and they wouldn't have even paid all of it anyway. Possibly none of it if they were big enough dick bags.
Careful with that "S" word. Many Americans are allergic to it, and now they can't afford their EpiPens.
Despite the fact that Libraries, The roads, Social Security and Medicaid, the military, police and fire departments, public schools, VACCINES, and the list goes on and on and on, are all technically socialist
How long do epipens keep, do they have to be refrigerated? At some point it might be more cost effective to take a trip to canada and buy in bulk.

They keep for a year and do not have to be refrigerated. They are fine kept at room temperature.
