I think there are some wrong ideas about addiction being aired in this thread.
Some people have addictive personalities. Everyone is going to try these things, but for some people - whether what they try is alcohol or illegal drugs - once they start they can't stop. Even those that make it to AA or Narconon don't all manage to stay clean despite everything, despite the fact they really want to. Giving up to them is like giving up food and drink would be for you. It's not a choice, it's an impossibility. Amy looked worse and worse as time went on and was eventually difficult to look at - but she was suffering from an illness that was beyond her control, exacerbated by her mental health issues.
In my opinion it's really harsh to say she should have just stopped, or should never have started. How many people here have never tried ANY mind altering drug, not even alcohol?

...hence you don't have an addictive personality and so are unlikely to be able to understand Amy Winehouse's frame of mind.
I suggest you read Russell Brand's article on Amy Winehouse to gain more of an insight.

really so you've never had coffee or sugar?
and of course you don't see the attraction of alcohol, you've never had any
If you're going to stoop to that level than technically any food is mind-altering since it creates fullness and releases endorphins.
not really, food is not taking specifically as a mind-altering substance as alcohol (depressant), sugar and coffee (stimulants) are. I was just pointing out sugar and coffee because it's hypocritical to say that you don't understand the appeal of drugs when you most likely consume two of the most common ones and you know what the appeal is of those
I'm not insulting her though. I have family members with addictive personalties WITH addiction problems, so I understand more than you think.
Oh, well fair enough then.
I've become a bit jaded with the whole affair and do tend to assume the worst right now. Amy went to school with my brother and she's friends with close friends of the family who have been rather affected by the situation.
I don't have an issue with any of the jokes, because I don't think there's anything wrong with telling those sorts of near the knuckle jokes, but I'm seeing a lot of people on the internet call her an untalented slag or that she deserved it... I mean, it seems that people really don't get the sort of pressure someone famous is placed under. She seemed to be a lovely girl, a bit unhinged sure and at times quite violent, but all the same she was a good person deep down. Quite sweet. I only met her once, but she was very friendly (if rather drunk). You only have to look at stuff like her infamous (and hilarious) appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks to see she watched other people's backs

She was a good girl, she just got caught up in some bad crap. People seem keen to portray her as a talentless hack, but I think she had something special.

It's your loss really.
Well not maybe a loss, but the only dumb thing about drugs is when someone uses them irresponsibly, overdosing and quite possibly dying too, not to mention just acting like a fool under the influence.
