It's been proven time and again that video games doesn't cause violence so why is Hatred a special case just because it has a different brand of offensiveness?
Some cunts nobody should care about had their feelings hurt.
That's what i managed to gather from the initial outcry at least.
You don't mean worse brand?
It doesn't really matter if it's worse or not but I personally don't like seeing things removed just because it is "offensive"

I got PTSD from hearing about Sandy Hook on the news

Otherwise I agree.
And frankly if they think removing this game is what they should do they can fuck the right off from video games.
Valve as one of the biggest video game distributors on the market should defend the medium as an artform no matter how tasteless games can be.
Them backing down just shows that they have no balls.
Edit:I'm out of this conversation, getting myself way too heated and need to cool down

So you'd be fine with the game if they portrayed the shooter as a clean cut family man?
My opinion is that it sounds like something that belongs on some flash game site and I have a hard time fathoming that anyone gives a shit that its removed from Steam.
The developers knew that their game would never reach Steam, they did it for this outcry and now all of you people know about and can't wait for an asinine murder simulator that's been done a thousand times before in the form of hack'n'slash RPG games. Except those games had a plot, and colors.
Who cares, its a shitty game and you guys always whine about quality control. Be happy that shit is being filtered out.

You do know that TF2 was made by Valve right?
...it's a shitty game...
Based on a trailer?
Who cares, its a shitty game and you guys always whine about quality control. Be happy that shit is being filtered out.
But shit isn't being filtered out.
That's the point.
Based on a trailer?
Yeah, it looks like try hard edgy crap I don't expect the game to be any good.
Who cares, its a shitty game and you guys always whine about quality control. Be happy that shit is being filtered out.
It's a game with a concept that's unique because it's never really been done non satirically, and in terms of core gameplay and graphics it looks a lot better than A LOT of other shit that goes through greenlight on a regular basis. This game looks like it has actual effort behind it.

This isn't about Hatred, fuck Hatred with a rake, it's about principles.
If valve is just gonna pussy out and remove shit "just because", then who knows what they are coming for next.

Do you have any idea how retarded that logic is?

There's plenty of simple games that "Might as well be flash games"
It doesn't give anyone the right to censor it.
Steam is not a platform for art, it's a video game distribution platform. And when stuff is released trough Greenlight Valve acts as publisher, instead of the distributing role they hold relative to titles like GTA, Postal and what have you.
So yes I'd say they're allowed to be anal about what gets trough, even if its inconsistent and entirely to avoid a soccer mum outcry.
So what, this principle shit is all because you associate Steam with Valve which you associate with Half Life, So thus they must be the pinnacle of game distribution philosophy?
It's a fucking store, get over it.

Doesn't force them to publish it either.
I mention flash because anyone can make a flash game. Not because it's simple but because a flash game doesn't need a publisher.
That makes zero sense

I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. And i suspect you don't either.

you're right and I'm not even gonna edit it.

I'll make it simple:
Stop upholding Steam to some higher code of ethics. They're a business.

Actually this is standard business practice that Valve/Steam isn't adhering to.

No.
Expecting the biggest game distributor on the planet to have some consistent standards is completely fair and reasonable.
Who cares, its a shitty game and you guys always whine about quality control. Be happy that shit is being filtered out.
Mechanically speaking, I think Hatred looks much more polished then the absolute trash that gets green lit. People want Valve to filter out the barely functioning titles looking to make a quick buck and while I'm not interested in purchasing Hatred, I will argue that it's a step above something like Slaughtering Grounds.
Valve is in the wrong here.
A lot of people are trying to make analogous comparisons to GTA and Postal and such, but frankly in this circumstance the detail and painstaking dramatization and glorification of cruelty and violence, the lack of any satirical elements, the tone of the game, etc. excludes it from being related to either franchise in an ironclad and infallible comparison.
This was to be expected, they made the game probably for the express purpose of creating controversy, if it's a hotbutton issue a fairly mainstream distribution service like steam is not going to touch it. They got the controversy they were trying to create, 10/10 job well done, game succeeded in it's goal. Frankly I'm not sure what people were expecting to happen beyond that point.
Hatred's marketing is based purely around creating controversy, especially considering recent events with school shootings and whatnot. So I think Valve is justified in saying "we don't associate with that shit" if they want to. The fact that the Greenlight brought in a lot of other crappy games isn't relevant.
[editline]17th December 2014[/editline]
Plus I don't feel like that, if I even wanted to get this game, it not being on Steam would be a hindrance in any way.
The big deal here isn't that Hatred got barred from Valve's store, because honestly Valve can (well, they might be subject to anti-trust law, but yeah) just decide what they want on the store and that's fine by me.
The big deal is that people are at last realizing that Valve has basically a monopoly on selling games. If you as a developer want to sell your game, you need to go through Valve (unless you have a really big franchise like BF or whatever) and you need to pay them their cut. Sure, you can put your game on Origin or GoG, but it's not gonna sell nearly as much, even though they may (or may not) take a smaller cut than Valve.
Consumers and developers alike need competition for Steam.

Gender Bender Xtreme whatsitsname belongs on a shitty flash game site too. Guess where we can buy it for a whooping 25 bucks?
Gabe Newell approves Hatred as long as you don't waste any animals
The game is definitely back on the Greenlight website though and developer Destructive Creations’ Facebook page has a screenshot of an alleged email from him Newell, which reads as follows:
Hi, Jaroslaw,
Yesterday I heard that we were taking Hatred down from Greenlight. Since I wasn’t up to speed, I asked around internally to find out why we had done that. It turns out that it wasn’t a good decision, and we’ll be putting Hatred back up. My apologies to you and your team. Steam is about creating tools for content creators and customers.
Good luck with your game
Gabe

There’s no indication of what led to the change of heart, but the auto-reply on Destructive Creations boss Jaroslaw Zielinski’s email reads: “Where’s the line?” The answer: “No killing children or animals.”
Whether that’s meant to be a joke or an indication that Valve has demanded changes to the game, or at least an assurance as to the content, is not clear.
Haha what? Humans are OK but no killing animals? My guess is they were joking.
Haha what? Humans are OK but no killing animals? My guess is they were joking.
Don't forget the children. Valve doesn't want to see a repeat of Fallout 1.
I don't think they're joking, Steam is pretty damn quick to remove any "killable children" mods in the workshop
