this is absolutely ridiculous, theres no tie to slavery or colonialism in that article at all.
they're two completely different things as far as that article is concerned.
and what bearing does a tradition in Iran have to do with this?
Um..they are both traditions that a small group of retards get offended by every year. Or can Iranians not feel offended since they're not black?
God Damn dude. Leave some cookies out on a plate this Christmas.
What I'm saying, to put this bluntly, is that maybe if you weren't deprived of wonder and amazement as a child you wouldn't feel the need to constantly argue with random people on the internet all the time.
can a mod pm me and tell me if making an oxygen deprivation quip is going too far

takes one to know one
The character is depicted with blackface and people find him offensive. This has everything to do with it seeing how the UN thinks THIS is ok, but our traditions aren't.
Google the name and you'll find enough sources on why people think it's racist or that it originates from slaves.
ok, if its racist then the UN's in the wrong on that account. this is about black pete being racist, not the infallibility of the UN

no he's not depicted with blackface at all. blackface is a very specific and european thing.
if you think its racist then ill concede that and say the UN is wrong to consider that ok, but what does that have to do with zwarte piet
damn thats so original
sounds like people say this to you all the time, I wonder why
You really are stupid aren't you.
He's not stupid! He's morally superior!
what an unfortunate loss
my heart goes out to all those affected
sounds like people say this to you all the time, I wonder why
its true its not the first time someone with zero creativity lodged a meaningless insult
He's not stupid! He's morally superior!
definitely not the first time
Is it racist? Maybe. Should people care? Nope.
its true its not the first time someone with zero creativity lodged a meaningless insult

Brushing off criticism as 'meaningless insults' lol. The first step is admitting you have a problem bro.
Is it racist? Maybe. Should people care? Nope.
yes who cares about racism??
id say if people are uncomfortable with it and say its caused by soot rather than the roots of moor slavery and minstrel that it derives from then already a lot has changed, so people obviously do care.
all it takes is for dutch society to get honest about it, and the practice will probably disappear or be replaced with something else as the society becomes more and more mixed from immigration.

*fart*
I can't believe how retarded the international community is about this whole affair.
1) They're black because of the soot from the chimneys that they climb down. (White hands/Red lips/Blue .
lmao, and you actually believed that?
it is absolutely a black minstrel
there's not a single doubt about it. just because it's a tradition, doesn't mean it's not racist as hell
[editline]23rd October 2013[/editline]
people defending this are either in complete denial or were lied to growing up about what it actually is (because your parents knew it was racist)
As Stephen Fry once said:
“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so fucking what.”
It's about time we stopped banning things that might happen to offend people without the intention to and instead work towards stopping purposely offensive things.
Um, I don't think stephen fry had blatant racism in mind when he said that
No it just irritates me that because a few people are offended we should change a tradition that has nothing to do with racism in this day and age.
it's black face
it IS racist in this day and age. just because you've been doing something a long time doesn't mean you should keep doing it. pertinent example: slavery
Ok I said I was going to leave this thread, but one more thing.
Thinks he knows better than anyone in the entire dutch society.
lots of dutch people have written very smart things on this subject and i definitely dont know better than them but thank you
it's like the baa baa blacksheep nursey rhyme, some how a load of white people took offence because it was racist to black people becuase it had the word wool in it.
Ok I said I was going to leave this thread, but one more thing.

I checked, they didn't know it was racist, they didn't care for it. They carried on the tradition as they experienced it.
Not everyone checks the wiki page on a celebration to make sure there's no racism intended.
oh so i guess just because some people don't realise its actually a really racist thing (and intended to be in its origins) means its ok
We don't have the term 'blackface' here. I guess that's something American which seems pretty racist.
just because you don't have the same word for it doesn't mean it's okay. it's a parody of a black person. it's making fun of their features. it's racist whether you have a word for black face or not.
And here we go with [del]America[/del] the World Police telling other countries what they can't do because they want them to conform with us.
And here we go with [del]America[/del] the World Police telling other countries what they can't do because they want them to conform with us.
since when is making fun of another race for being that race just an american thing? are you serious?
This whole idea of Racism is incredibly stupid. I don't see why anyone cares about things such as this. They obviously are not actively insulting or otherwise degrading black people in any possible way. In no way do they state, or try to somehow show or prove that black people are in fact inferior to other races. Why does everyone pull the racism card as soon as something is show to identify people.
No, I am not saying that harmful discrimination is bad, it is, it is a very bad thing. As a humanist I believe all humans should have equal rites and be treated the same. This DOES NOT MEAN that you cannot identify people, or do other things that just happen to have a black person involved.
I find the entire concept beyond stupid. Are they actively degrading black people because this particular celebration happens to have a blackfaced person that gives presents to children? One might call them slaves, because that is a harsh word in todays society, but are they actually slaves I doubt anyone has proof of this? Yes this celebration has its origins, but how can anyone say they are slaves? Do we state that Santa's elves are also slaves? In which case, why aren't elves banned as they are racist against white people? Applying a rule to one set of people and not another is EXACTLY what discrimination is.
People need to stop being "for black people's rights" or "for women's rights" or "for gay rights" and be for everyone's fucking rights.

the makeup itself is making fun of black people. not to mention, i assume from that picture, it's dancing and playing a tambourine. it's the complete embodiment of a minstrel slave.
