He would be justified in the eyes of the law if he was proven to have defended himself against an aggressor. Of course, nothing has been proven yet.

This is what happened. Zimmerman walks up to Trayvon with a gun. Trayvon: Whoa man, be cool! Zimmerman: I am cool now that I'm putting your punk ass in the ground! Trayvon: You can't just kill someone and get away with it! Zimmerman: Oh ya? Watch me. Zimmerman proceeds to violently scratch his own head and then jumps onto the ground and bangs it on the pavement and then stands back up. Trayvon: What are you doing? This is messed up man, I'm out of here. Zimmerman shoots Trayvon then looks at the stars and laughs. Yup that's how it went. Take it to the bank. You'll all see when this gets made into a made for tv movie.

One "enhanced" frame? And the fact it goes all the way up his head is kind of strange for someone who said they received wounds from the back of their head. Even if that was actually gashes, it still barely fits his account. At first I was like "I stand corrected", then I realised this faulty at the very least. Haven't followed this much, but the little I have seen is people blindly accepting any evidence that supports Zimmerman being guilty is immediately taken for absolute truth and anything that doesn't is rejected.

A good friend of my father's is a cop and one of the things he was told, that if a person is unarmed and tries to take your gun, but ultimately fails, you cannot open fire on them.

If someone is straddling you and mashing your head into concrete, you have a pretty good argument towards that. It doesn't matter how old the person is attacking you. If Martin was truly mashing Zimmerman's head into the concrete, then Zimmerman had a pretty good reason to shoot the kid, as he would have been being attacked by someone with a deadly weapon (a big fucking rock.) Especially in a state with a stand your ground law, where he would have no obligation to attempt to get up and leave (assuming he even could.) On the other hand, that is all assuming that things transpired the way Zimmerman said they did. The fact of the matter is that only two people directly experienced the situation, and one of them is dead. So now, police must attempt to piece together what transpired, and do so in a manner that does not infringe upon the rights of those who were involved that are still living. Until there is a clear indication of wrongdoing, the police should not be arresting anyone. If it later appears that Zimmerman acted outside of his legal powers in that state, he will be arrested and imprisoned. But that is for the courts and the police to decide, based on the evidence presented to them. Finally, simply being 17 doesn't mean that you're not going to try to hurt or kill another person. On top of that, Zimmerman has been described as paranoid about black people in the neighbourhood, called Martin a coon over the 911 call (his friend claims he said goon), accosted him for literally no reason other than he was a black kid with a hoody on.
