I find it hard to call this an accident, as while it is quite correct to say this was an accident (provided he wasn't suicidal), at the same time it seems to convey the wrong meaning.

Dropping a gun and having it discharge killing someone is an accident, swerving off a road because a deer ran in front of you is an accident, pointing a gun at your head and pulling the trigger, even if you don't think it's loaded, just isn't so accidental. Why? Because to get to that point, there's a series of events that have to take place which is clearly dangerous and should never be done unless you actually do intend to shoot yourself in the head.

Simply put, I don't think the term accident, despite being accurate, does the situation justice.
