Why Highly Intelligent People Fail At The Most Important Things In Life
The whole field of science he's working within is considered bullshit by many other scientists
Evpsych is a respected science though
Oh, they have to memorize words. So much talent required.
You also have to play, which is harder than it seems.
Just look at the theatre and drama. For some reason, it is a place where literature and entertainment meets. And I'd call it everything but mindless.
Intelligent people are more likely to be nocturnal because humans are designed to wake up when the sun comes up and go to sleep when the sun goes down. They are more likely to be homosexual, because humans are evolutionarily designed to reproduce heterosexually. They are more likely to enjoy instrumental music because music in its evolutionary origin was vocal, and they are more likely to consume alcohol, cigarettes and drugs because all of these substances are evolutionarily novel.
well there's my excuse for committing debauchery.
Here’s a little thought experiment. Imagine that, on September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers came down, the President of the United States was not George W. Bush, but Ann Coulter. What would have happened then? On September 12, President Coulter would have ordered the US military forces to drop 35 nuclear bombs throughout the Middle East, killing all of our actual and potential enemy combatants, and their wives and children. On September 13, the war would have been over and won, without a single American life lost. Yes, we need a woman in the White House, but not the one who’s running
Holy shit, this guy is serious?
Many intelligent people spent most of their time being intelligent, so there's no time to socialize.
intelligence just means being quick at accepting and processing information, so i don't understand how an intelligent person could spend their time "being intelligent".
What's 'important' in life is subjective anyway
unsure why I'm getting rated dumb(?)
Apparently intelligent people are bizarro versions of 'normal' people.
Also, why does the LSE keep letting people publish shitty papers like this that have nothing to do with economics or a related subject?
I don't know bout you guys but there are plenty of people who manage to balance a decent social life and still manage good grades in school / manage decent competency in what they do and I'd consider those kinds of people fairly smart over people who can only do one thing or another (unless they really specialize in something)
Edit:
To illustrate:

with some leeway between the two branches of course, just an opinion
I fail at everything, I drink A LOT, does this make me a nominee for the most intelligent human being in existence?
Shite, I'm just a lazy dumb fuck with 0% motivation, who would prefer to sit and lol at these sensationalist headlines than go out and get his 'hole'.....
Life is good :v:
as bertrand russell probably never said: time you enjoyed wasting is not wasted time
Evpsych is a respected science though
Not really. There is a lot of unfalsifiable hypotheses and theories in evpsych. I mean, it can provide some interesting answers, and isn't wholly unscientific, but it isn't really at the point where you can consider it a respected science.
Oh, they have to memorize words. So much talent required.
you wouldn't last 2 minutes on a high school stage lmao
Some of it seemed true but I feel like throughout the whole thing he was just saying "Your smart? Do the exact opposite of what evolution trained you for."
Makes sense.
You're with your date and you can't figure out why it isn't working out right. You've already calculated that her face has the perfect fractional symmetry. Her voice has the proper high and low notes. You have creased your shirts at the right angle and form. You have calculated the right amount of money in order to purchase the perfect night out right down to the very drinks. You make sure you talk about topics to stimulate thought, essentially guaranteeing friendly banter. You periodically check your food intake ratio compared to hers so you don't eat faster and finish your plate first.
Sometimes you really just need to get to the point.
So smarter people tend to be weirder, that's kind of common knowledge.
I am number 2 in my class and I am also well known at school. No one considers me weird because most of my class knows me and respects me. I also have lots of friends, but maybe because I am also on the football team.
/Sorry for the arrogance.
"important"
Anyone who claims to know what is intrinsically 'important' in life is either delusional or a fraud. What is important to you is mundane to another.
I would not call mundane, everyday social interaction more important than changing the world for the better. Maybe you would, but that's why your name won't enter any history books.
yes.
believing in the supernatural or religion is a human universal
the rest of what he says is a load of rubbish though, non sequiters and populist pandering all over the place
The universal is not belief in God.
The universal is a fear of the unknown, and our brain's tendency to make shit up and delude itself both consciously and unconsciously to resolve the cognitive dissonance between wanting to know something and not being able to.
Calling that trait "religion" is an oversimplification. That quality of humanity is the root cause of far more than theism.

Have you ever tried acting, ever?
I mean in front of other people, not when you pretend you're a secret agent when nobody is watching.
Being disingenuous is a skill. It's very hard to lie or act out of motivations that are not your own convincingly.
You would say that a con-artist is skilled at deception, would you not? Being able to assume a role and play it convincingly to other people? Acting isn't all that different. You're trying to convince others you're something you are not. Human beings are very good at spotting fakes, so being able to convince someone of such a thing takes a lot of talent.

I said "tend to be", some of the smartest people I know are pretty eccentric, a lot of high profile geniuses acted pretty strange too, Tesla and Einstein come to mind.
I said "tend to be", some of the smartest people I know are pretty eccentric, a lot of high profile geniuses acted pretty strange too, Tesla and Einstein come to mind.
Again, what is strange to you is normal to another.
Having a unique set of priorities is not "strange." It's called being a person. The only thing that makes it 'strange' is that they aren't like you.

True, but while getting excited about how sedimentary rocks are formed is a good trait for a geography teacher, people generally think it's weird.

People think lots of things.
They are rarely correct.
I don't understand. Most celebrities are actors and actresses, and I would consider acting a skill.
I think he meant a specific type of celebrity: Socialites. Famous for being famous, you know?
I think he meant a specific type of celebrity: Socialites. Famous for being famous, you know?
but the point of the graph was to generalize.
so no i think it's just a really shitty graph
I said "tend to be", some of the smartest people I know are pretty eccentric, a lot of high profile geniuses acted pretty strange too, Tesla and Einstein come to mind.
Oh sorry :P Haha, I thought you said all of them are weird. The #1 of the class above me is really popular and on football team, #2 is a well known lesbian, #3 is a varsity soccer player, #4 is varsity basketball.
Also in my class, #1 is a 3 sport varsity player for baseball, basketball, and football. #3 is varsity football. #4 is a well known gay kid who's in theatre. #7 is varsity tennis player.
So, basically at our school most of the smart kids are almost all popular and in a lot of varsity sports.
Except me because I am not good at sports. :P
People think lots of things.

My rambling is probably proof of that.
For the economist this is an awful, awful article

I wish I could be you
No seriously I am so fucking generic and boring that I just don't feel like even trying
I don't really see any sort of science in here at all. Am I missing something?
i was low in my class ranks and everyone (read: popular kids) thought i was weird so i didn't do sports either
but that's because i was and am still weird, there's no shame in that, and if you feel generic and boring find something that makes you stand out

Normalcy is highly overrated.
I don't really see any sort of science in here at all. Am I missing something?
Yes.
An intrinsic, scientific definition of importance.
Being weird and strange is only going to make life more interesting and challenging. Does anyone really want to be boring and normal?
I also think that being popular and "peaking" in high school as oh so many kids do is a hilariously sad thing and I find it endlessly entertaining to see the most popular people from my high school getting fat and having kids by their mid 20's.
