I think it's sad that people are trying to get a profit by suing the cinema which couldn't have done shit. This gesture is absolutely fine, even if the relatives don't want to go back there, they can simply refuse like they did.
i feel bad for the theater, the response was so rude and mean. i understand why they said that, but the theater was honestly trying to make a nice gesture and it was just badly timed
That's fucking disgusting. Let's fucking play the law game, here are the rules and here's a couple of pointers from the fucking experts to get you as much money as possible. You say it like it's a god damned chess strategy or something. Imagine a world where you sued people who legitimately did you wrong and appropriate damages were awarded.
This is pretty much why I've always been in favour of professional jurists ruling in cases, instead of a jury. It really hampers the flagrant abuse of the law like we're seeing in cases like this one.

The decision about what is 'legitimate' wrong and what is appropriate damages to award is for the jury to decide. That's where the strategy comes in. You, even if you were innocent of wrongdoing, might not want to go in front of a jury. It's possible in some situations for juries to award more in damages than you would have spent just settling out of court. Cinemark has to consider that if they get sued and wind up in court, a jury might feel sorry enough for a shooting victim to award them tons of money. It might actually be cheaper for Cinemark to just throw them some money now so they'll go away and not sue, even if Cinemark is not to blame for the shooting itself.

Families blew it out of line plain and simple. They can't see it past their hurt and grief right now.
I think a better offer would have been to gift them a few movies of their choice but carefully removing anything to do with batman from the catalogue while they are choosing them.
He looks insane. You can see it in his eyes.
not as insane as:
That's not disgusting, that's just a free opportunity to finish watching the movie.
That picture is nightmare fuel. Startled me so bad when the web page loaded.
It's weird, you wouldn't think an imbecile making a weird face would have that affect.

I jumped when I opened this thread.
"Sorry about the dead family, here's a free $20 gift certificate and a free T-shirt!"
On one hand it is a nice gesture. On the other hand it's equivalent would be like asking a Holocaust Survivor to revisit the camp they were in during the war. [editline]2nd January 2013[/editline] Not saying this isn't nice, but still.
It isn't like that at all. It's more like asking the relatives of a holocaust survivor to go there if anything. Why isn't there a rule against shitty analogies in SH?
So now they're protesting and boycotting the theater. I don't get it, a day of remembrance is bad timing but holding a protest/boycott mid-mourning is cool?
