I can't tell which Activision property is going to die first, CoD or WoW. Exciting times man.
Most people who play WoW are idiots anyway. I'm cool with having fewer trolls. [editline]4th August 2011[/editline]
Hardly, I know of several guild on my realm that have split including my friends guild (top guild of the server). I myself quit the game a month after cataclysm came out after blizzard made a complete U-turn on their policy on raids being hard and epics being epic in favour of turning the game into a "fast food" raid dispenser for players who want to be able to blitz the content with little skill required or prior knowledge of the fights required. They failed to follow through on something that they had promised to players in the build up to cataclysm and had in fact delivered to players lucky enough to participate in the testing of said expansion.
Dude, did you even play during WotLK? What was your progression in tier 11 heroics if they were so easy.

I was one of the previous 600k. I can't decide if that's hipster or not.
[release]Activision Blizzard latest earning call revealed that World of Warcraft lost another 300,000 subscribers last quarter, following the loss of 600k subscribers announced last quarter. In this conference call we also learned that: The next patch will include "major raid and dungeon content", we can most likely expect a raid and a 5-man from Patch 4.3 Patch 4.3 will be the "largest content update since Cataclysm" It will be released later this year, which means that we can probably expect a PTR soon. It's also worth noting that despite the loss of players, Mike Morhaime pointed out that the new trial system resulted in an increase in new account creations. For more details on the earning call, go check the coverage on sites such as Venturebeat or Gamasutra. www.mmo-champion.com[/release] It seems like Cataclysm can't quite live up to the hype that Wrath of the Lich King created.
Or you know...they have pretty much killed off every single bad guy in the lore and the players are finally tired of playing the same shit over and over again?
I played this game until level 33 and I didn't like it. I couldn't see the appeal in why everybody loves this game.
i'm one of those 300k :D happy about it
I think F2P games like LoL and TF2 are responsible for this.
World of Warcraft isn't going to die soon. There's tons more subscribers, and there's going to be an expansion most likely announced this Blizzcon and released next November. Expansions always bring back some people. The main reason why (I believe) most of these people quit has dwindled to a few major possibilities: A. Other MMO's, Rift is a good example. B. Not enough time to play WoW competitively (If WoW is anything like it was a couple of months ago when I was playing, it was waaaay harder to get into endgame content due to the difficulty being much higher than what most WoTLK players were used to.)
I still play WoW and I still enjoy it, I don't mind it when people quit but when they have to act all stuck-up about it it gets annoying.
I still play WoW and I still enjoy it, I don't mind it when people quit but when they have to act all stuck-up about it it gets annoying.
So true, everyone who quits always has to say something like: "I finally got my priorities straight and stopped playing that drug of a game" Even though there's really nothing wrong with it. Most people who play really aren't that addicted to it. In fact, most of the people who play it could probably be compared to Facepunch, they get on once a day, check everything, do a few things, then log off.
The saddest thing in my opinion about WoW now is that the dev team* is just raping the fuck out of the lore.
Chris Metzen*

one of those 300k isn't me.
I remember playing vanilla WoW several years ago, and being proud of my 3k frostbolt crits. Then the expansion hit and I quit due to boredom/lack of time. Now I check some sites to see people are doing over 50.000 DPS and I'm like "what the fuck happened". WoW killed itself. There's only so much mudflation a game can handle before it turns into a parody of its former self. The only thing I really fear is that they're going to WoWify DiabloIII in an attempt to win over lost customers.
fully geared level 85 characters now days have between 100 and 200k health too
Dude, did you even play during WotLK? What was your progression in tier 11 heroics if they were so easy.
I did play wotlk and the only good raid in that expansion was Ulduar (ICC was ok before they nerfed it into the floor). I never said tier 11 heroics were easy, actually they are too hard for me, but I don't want to beat them, I would be fine beating bosses in a normal mode raid but I new blizzard would just go and nerf it again, thus trivialising a step in what could have been a nice raid progression. Those who are unaware of the massive change in design that blizzard made see this: http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/2053469 a couple of months after they posted that they reduced the difficulty of dungeons and raids massively (heroic raids stayed the same, leaving a large difficulty gap for a lot of players).
[sp]Neither[/sp]
Right because their success doesn't at all mirror every single other Activision IP that have died slow painful deaths, and aren't showing either their peaks or declining already?
Activision is like King Midas, everything they touch turns into money and dies.
I tried playing this game once. I got some shitty quest to pick 10 cactus apples or something which was fucking gay because I didn't actually know where I was supposed to find these fucking apples because I didn't know shit. I figured they'd be out in the middle of nowhere in some desert or something so I started venturing. Twenty minutes later I find these god damned apples and I head back to town to collect my reward. "Cheers bro I really needed those, here is your reward: 20 cactus apples!" What the fuck?! The next 15 minutes was me running around in circles because I'd pissed off a bunch of flying things like 5 levels higher than me (because I was still like level 1) and they wouldn't stop chasing me no matter how far I ran. How does anyone get into this game?!

I was making a joke but yeah you're right I should have commented on the article as well(and I totally meant to but I uh got distracted!). What I meant to add to my post is that I imagine WoW's lifespan is coming to an end regardless of what Blizzard do. It's been a huge success and it's survived quite successfully for nearly 7ish years or something yes? In that time I expect many players will tire of the gameplay no matter how often content is added.
That happens with every new expansion. People who quit check it out, some get bored and quit to wait for the new expansion, rinse and repeat.
This hasn't happened before. [editline]5th August 2011[/editline]
Wasn't Cataclysm the best selling PC game of all time http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-12-13-world-of-warcraft-cataclysm-sales-are-wow I imagine people who went back to WOW for the expansion are now dropping off though nearly 1 million user lost in six months in pretty unprecedented
Black Ops was selling like crazy too, but Modern Warfare 2 still ended up being the more popular one. Sales doesn't really say much in that regard.
Im really getting tired of WoW. Thinking of getting back to Warhammer Online. Now that was a fresh start from WoW.
Im really getting tired of WoW. Thinking of getting back to Warhammer Online. Now that was a fresh start from WoW.
Warhammer Online had a whole slew of it's own problems, I really really wanted it to be good and everything they said it would be, but the closer it got to release the more hobbled it seemed. They also made a lot of mistakes really early on, mainly creating three times as many servers as they'd actually need, that hurt the community aspect and left a lot of servers either dead or near empty. Couple this with balancing issues and slow to react development due to the studio being let go over time. All of which is a shame because I enjoyed playing the game, and I really wanted to love it, but it shot itself in the foot too many times.
finally people are realizing that it's actually a shit game
