what if at the end of half-life 3 you think you're playing as the legendary gordon freeman but you're actually some random rebel that just looks like him and thinks he's him
To be honest I'm more excited for the dota update :v

I think one franchise has had enough of that lately don't you?

Is that a reference to a recently released game of the [sp]metal gear[/sp] variety?
MMMM object oriented data objects abstractly defined to match ANY game.......

Don't give Gabe any ideas
They should just release h3 onto the store, no front page or anything, and it only comes up when you properly type Half-Life 3
Ehh, it would need one of those "Out Now" greeting message when you log in, with simple black background and hl logo with a three, so people would just close the window like normal, then be like "Wait.. what was that"

Gordon Freeman is not one person, it's a title. Gordon from HL1 and HL2 are not same person, gman is just a liar.

Call me an optimistic cunt but how would Valve, a company that is damn good at secrecy, push this file out with an unrelated game? I'm thinking they did this on purpose to generate hype with an impeding announcement.

Probably because this file is actually unrelated to hl3 in everything but name. There's been a lot of hl3 or ep3 related names throughout the years in various pieces of released game content. It probably doesn't mean anything.

I can be wrong, but doesn't it also reference combine turrets we haven't seen in other half-life games, and explicitly names HL3 in some descriptions?

It contains stuff that is unmistakably Half-Life related, and mentions "HL3" many times throughout.
I don't know what this file is, how it ended up there, but surely they can't have done it on purpose.
is the file still there? i'd imagine valve would have patched it out within the few hours of it being there

It's just the Source 2 equivalent of a Hammer .fgd file. I can think of a million ways that it came up there on accident.

They're all still there, for whatever reason.

Hey really aren't
Remember the mailing list accident a few years back?

This has happened before and will happen again. I'm not sure they care as much as everyone thinks they do.

They are, and there were another 2 updates the same day in which they could've taken them out.

Keep an eye on that next week, if they don't take it out then I guess they don't want to raise any suspicions by deleting it.

Sure, and it would just have the blatant name "hl3.txt".
Talking about mocking the fanbase.

Yeah, I mean
It's not like Half Life 2 is in a folder called "hl2" with files named like:
hl2.exe
hl2ep2
hl2mp
surfaceproperties_hl2.txt
Oh wait. :v:
Mocking the fanbase comes from it winding up in a DOTA patch, not the name per se. It's pretty standard naming convention for Valve.
If anyone alive today live to see HL3, that would be cool.
even if it's hl3 it'll get the DNF effect
The hell are you on with?
There is no Duke Nukem Forever "effect".
The game didn't fail because people were overhyped for it and expected too much. The game we received was made in like a year and sucked, that's why it failed.

call me a stubborn piece of shit but like i said before, i will only get hyped if an ARG pops up, valve announces it within the next month, or marc replies to my email. i've grown resistant to rumors which try to get you hyped and then are debunked within the next week of its finding. which is why i try not to get my hopes up in case of this happening again.

I'm not sure how you would "debunk" the existence of this file.

correction: i'm afraid this file is just something that was being worked on in the past in 2008 or so and was just accidentally put in the update. like i said, call me stubborn, but i don't want to get my hopes up.
