As we grow older, every website that was big to our childhood will die. Sad.
Time to pour one out for the host of a huge chunk of my childhood.
Dammit, I uploaded an old tutorial video series to that site (and Rapidshare) that I made when I was 15, I would love to watch that again. Does anyone know of an archive of rapidshare or filefront that is searchable?
I'll never forget the place, it was the go to community for mods and content..
Someone should really post a request about this on /r/DataHoarder. With that said, 28TB is really nothing. For the most interresting things 4TB is probably enough. I'm guessing that this is without some really solid compression and deduplication of course.
dont leave your files on a hard drive where they might be destroyed by accidents or extreme weather, upload it all to the cloud. it'll all be destroyed in 20 years GUARANTEED.
This is sad. Back in 2006 I found the half life 2 filefront site. It's where I got my first copy of Garrysmod and the first site I became a contributor for, posting some news articles and such under SkyRider (who is also a FP member), I was 12/13 at the time. There were some old sound mods on filefront I might try and find to download before they disappear. It's a shame that some peoples work will disappear forever, but these things happen. Hopefully someone gets a full backup before the end of the month.
I remember seeing you and SkyRider back when I was lurking there. JKAfiles was the shit with a great community. I haven't been there in ages but the last time I checked up on it, the forums were mostly dead and the mod release flow died down quite a bit.
Filefront was my first forum thinking of it.
Why are they closing, though? I don't see any specific reasons.
They've had money issues for ages. Hell they had to let a lot of the staff go a few years ago and actually closed a lot of the hosting sites during the Ziff takeover. Remember hosting is not cheap.
Fantastic news! 28TB is less than I expected actually. But I guess games weren't 100GB back then as they are nowadays.
I think the original archive was well over 100Tb. A lot of stuff was never recovered after the takeover and subsequent restoration.
My very first mod/photoshop was hosted on MohFiles, I had a ton of mods released from when I was 13/14 on there. I pulled a few of them a few years ago and stored them on my backup drives. I vividly remember searching for BF1942 mods on BF1942files, downloading the three parts of Desert Combat, taking all day on old DSL. Good memories.
Goodbye JK3Files :(
JK3files has already been gone for some time, thats why the jkhub guys are making an archive.
I hope someone archives all the stuffs on the MOHAA site and COD site, I'd hate to lose that stuff.
I hope someone archives all the stuffs on the MOHAA site and COD site, I'd hate to lose that stuff.
They've already been gone for a while.
I hope somebody gets all the data from the battlefront 2 modding section and the Jedi Knight III player models and maps. I think I still have JuRancor Park on my hard drive.
They've already been gone for a while.
Fuuuuuck
Man I remember downloading most if not all of my mods from Filefront, I even found the HL2 filefront site, and I'm pretty sure it contributed to me finding about Garry's mod and shit. Childhood site right there, it's a damn shame its shutting down. Although I haven't visited it much after it became Gamefront.
That's a serious shame. I used Kotor2files all the fucking time as a kid, constantly downloading and trying new mods and shit for Kotor 1 and 2. I even had a mod made for me that changed the Scoundrel class name to Smuggler for no other reason than why not have a little more Han Solo connection. I even remember some of the moderators and how they would review like every mod that got uploaded. I hope as many pages as humanly possible are archived so we can still look at this stuff. I seriously wonder how many mods are going to be just gone. I mean if nobody saved them, they're just gone, good luck getting in contact with a mod author for a mod released a couple years ago, let alone 10 years ago. Apparently Kotor2files died a while ago and I never knew and that fucking sucks. I guess I'll just have to learn to like vanilla.
Though I haven't used the site in 1000 years, it's sad because I remember downloading tons of half life and half life 2 mods there. I guess steam works killed it. Rip in peace
Ah damn, the black and white 2 filefront is already down. I wanted to download some nostalgic maps I played edit: nevermind it's just another link now
Good old filefront, i remember using that sites for half-life mods from 2004-2009
Why are they closing, though? I don't see any specific reasons.
Filefront as a hosting service has been pretty much pointless for year and years now. It's feature was that it was around for a while so lots of old files were still on the service. I'm surprised it lasted past 2011 to be honest.
JK3files has already been gone for some time, thats why the jkhub guys are making an archive.
This. I saw GameFront's death coming when I decided to check if HaloFiles was still up a few weeks ago, only to find that the plug had been pulled on the "Files" sites. While it's great that JK3Files is getting a second lease on life in the form of an archive, it's a real damn shame that other sites under the "Files" banner are now lost.
Fuck I feel old...
Someone contact the archive team?
Didn't this almost happen a few years ago?
I've always been using file/gamefront for my classic WoW patches back in the vanilla days. Guess I'll make a backup of all full patches
I'm not sure, since it was like 10-14 years ago, but I think I downloaded shittons of crappy Operation Flashpoint mods, models and maps from there. Stuff like mechs and shit. And fucked around with them in LAN with my friend. On PCs that could barely run OFP. Imagine that!

I don't know if specific games have been completely deleted already in the mean time, but it's not completely hopeless
So anyone know if all the Battlefront 2 data is backed up?
Didn't this almost happen a few years ago?
The original owners bought it back, its been in a terrible state of disrepair since, pretty much never loading pages right and super slow downloads.
