They have some deli items as well along with frozen quick foods like pizza at most stores. The prices are pretty cheap as well.

I was a block away getting a haircut that same day, was even planning on stopping by to grab something.

Not really sure what sparked it, but the best theory could be appearance. Carytown is full of upper-middle class suburbanites, millennials, and hipsters since most of the shops, cafes, and restaurants cater specifically to those demographics. The whole area's been heavily gentrified ever since VCU started buying up more and more property around the city, but there's lower income housing maybe a few blocks over, so it's not exactly isolated. Probably some idiot getting jumpy over nothing, or maybe some kind of report to be wary of individuals that these two just happened to look like.
