What is the situation in Afghanistan?
My brother was in the Army and he tells me the reason we were out there in Iraq for as long as we were was helping the Iraqis train in self defense, so that if al-Qaeda or a similar group flared up again they wouldn't have to wait for the US (or someone else) to swoop in and defend them.

if we're doing the same shit in Afghanistan then that's based on THEIR ability to defend themselves.
The Afghan National Army (ANA) have made good progress in the last few years, and more than once they've proven themselves competent. The real problem is with the police, which is still plagued by corruption and incompetence.

Overall, the situation is that Afghanistan still faces many problems, but it has been improving. I like to think that's a fairly neutral statement, but as I've never actually been to the country I can only speak from research and first hand accounts.
Well, even a blind squirrel is right twice a week.
Even a bad apple is broken twice a day
You guys seriously thinks he'll actually do what he says?
He's really desperate for votes now.

We can just get up and leave as soon as possible. We need to at the bare minimum to have at least 1 city in every province with a local police that isnt infiltrated by taliban spies or soldiers. I think we need to ask them at that point, "hey, either we stay here and try to build a stronger force for you to rule yourselves or well get out and let you have it from here". Just getting up and leaving is asking for the taliban to take control within a few weeks.
Im entirely for a swift exfill, but not doing in the wrong way just to get votes.
Fishing for votes I see.
Gingrich is just telling people what they want to hear. He probably wants to get out of Afghanistan as much as he actually wants to make the moon a state.
Can't just leave the country on the verge of a civil war. Finish what you start, Republicans.
Wasn't the American involvement in the Vietnam war from 63-75 though?
He's actually right, considering Vietnam wasn't technically a war.

The country's been in civil war for a long, long time, way before the ISAF-NATO force.

Taleban was in control of the majority of the country by 1996, including the capital. While it would obviously not be right to let them remain in power, the last time they fought against an Afghan government it resulted in thousands being massacred. If they pull out before the country is stabilized, they risk it happening all over again.

They might have controlled much of the country, but they were still fighting the Northern Alliance.

I'm confused. By "they" you mean the Taliban right? Sorry my brain is short circuiting today :v
Well of course he wants us to pull out of Afghanistan, those soldiers will be needed for his invasion of the moon.

Yeah, I meant the Taliban :P but they were still the closest thing Afghanistan had to a government, being in control of Kabul and all.
The situation in Afghanistan is nearly unwinnable and it'll only get worse. Get out while you still can, US
Surely if they left now, all of the soldiers deaths would have been for literally nothing.
he's preparing us for the reaper invasion
fucking gingrich knows
Surely if they left now, all of the soldiers deaths would have been for literally nothing.
Yes but what else can they do? Stay and loose even more soldiers while the Taliban influence grows larger largely as a result of US presence.

He was just waiting for something to happen, like a soldier killing 18 civilians. Then when everyone is sick of the war they will support him on this before they stop caring again.
