Before the days of Firefox, Chrome, Adblock... Back when IE's biggest competition was Netscape Navigator... Popup Ads were a plague. Then when Broadband started appearing in everyone's home, they put audio in them. "CONGRATULATIONS! YOU'VE BEEN SELECTED TO WIN A FREE IPOD NANO"
The worst ones were the fucking shits that popped up with only one pixel width of the window being visible (If at all) on the edge of your screen, and it played audio

To be fair though, advertising is a major component in what keeps the internet free. I don't mind a little ad in order to support the website/game/etc. Its just when they get annoying like with pop ups that it's a problem. I'm glad that adblock has a whitelisting program for that purpose.
