If there's an exception I've yet to see it
Obviously the main character there is a typical example of an over sexualized anime. Every episode is about some deep topic concerning humanity.
Each episode approaches a theme of society, like censoring, violence, communication problems, right or wrong, the ability some people have to bite the hand that just fed them, and so on.
I'm rather disappointed no one ever finds anime like this one, a lot of anime is shit, but sometimes gems like this can be found.
hai guys serial experiment lain is rlly good too all philosophical and rlly pretty looking and stuff :(

People told me Elfen Lied had deep subject matter and it turned out to be just as stupid as everything else. I can't make a judgment one way or another unless I have clips :colbert:

I read through this entire thread with a disappointed look on my face.
so you support idea of genocide?
Unquestionably.
Last Exile
Youtubing it right now. Voice acting is awful. Why do characters in animes always indicate surprise by making retching noises?
Cowboy Bebop
Seen it. Voice acting is awful.
Hayao Miyzaki films
Miyazaki? I've seen three. Voice acting is awful.
grave of the firefly's
The firefly's what?

[editline]12:40AM[/editline] Also, a lot of the anime we watch in north america is directed towards kids. Kids don't understand emotions like adults, and so they need help what characters might be feeling. Over the top voice acting helps them.
error in spelling. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grave_of_the_Fireflies carry on
Youtubing it. It looks absolutely beautiful and heartbreaking and the voice acting is STILL bad. I don't understand this phenomenon, honestly. Foreign films get dubbed into English all the time and sound just fine. Why do American dubs draw, without fail, on the same tiny pool of gut-wrenchingly talentless voice actors?

you could always read subs

Miyazaki? I've seen three. Voice acting is awful. The firefly's what?
That's why I don't watch English dubs. And with Grave of the Fireflies, it's a very deep film. I don't watch anime's for their voice acting quality. And in all honesty, I like Last Exile's voice acting.
error in spelling. would this do?
You're blaming anime has a whole, because the dubb is done poorly?
What am I supposed to do? I don't speak Japanese. If it helps, the inflection in the Japanese versions SOUNDS just as badly acted when compared to real people speaking Japanese.
I don't watch anime's for their voice acting quality. And in all honesty, I like Last Exile's voice acting.
Cool. I can't take something seriously for shit if it's acted as badly as this stuff. If it's played for laughs, like Pokemon, fine, it can be a lot of fun. But it REALLY lacks emotional range. How am I supposed to empathize with a character whose parents just died if his reaction is to go "Uhh...ggGUUHH!!!!?/? O_O;" I'll admit, I'm a little prejudiced right now because I spent a few hours playing Ace Combat 5, which is a really stellar example of anime's ability to utterly ruin things.
I don't speak Japanese. If it helps, the inflection in the Japanese versions SOUNDS just as badly acted when compared to real people speaking Japanese.
But that's the style. That'd be like a realistic person critiquing abstract art.
But that's the style.
To what end?
To what end?
What? They're allowed to do what they want, it's their style. "Limericks are dumb because they rhyme, real life doesn't rhyme so therefore haikus are better."

I mean, they're no Christoph Waltz's, or Vincint Price's, but still, I like it.
What? They're allowed to do what they want, it's their style.
I know it's their style. What purpose does such a stylistic choice serve? The negative effects of ridiculous, relentless overacting are obvious. I'm asking you what the positive effects are.
I think the voice acting is not have bad.
A lot of people like Twilight.
A lot of people like Twilight.
This is relevant?
This is relevant?
Just because you think something is good doesn't mean it is. It might just mean you have low standards.
I love Myazakis movies, however when they got that weird kid from The Weekenders to voice the dragon kid I was pissed.
I know it's their style. What purpose does such a stylistic choice serve? The negative effects of ridiculous, relentless overacting are obvious. I'm asking you what the positive effects are.
But that's the point. There is no positive, it's just how they like it. They have a formula which they follow, I assume since all anime are like it, there's a reason it's successful. Maybe Japanese people are unable to pay attention if it isn't over the top? [editline]01:09AM[/editline]
Just because you think something is good doesn't mean it is. It might just mean you have low standards.
But what is good? Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Just because we all see twilight as a cheesy romance novel, doesn't mean everyone sees it that way. To them, you're just being a douche by calling it shitty.
And Japanese culture being an ADD, sperged-out example of capitalism's ability to utterly superficialize a society isn't a reason to dislike it?
Except not every capitalist country in the world is like that, in fact only Japan is really. Possibly Korea. How can you say capitalism can do that when the only real example is the country in question? There are probably other reasons why Japan is so fucked up.

The fact that TH89 knows a lot about Japan shocked me I'm not saying that it is a bad thing, it's just suprising.
They kill whales, write corny dialogue for my videogames, and grope women. They are my nemesis :colbert:
Isn't Japan like, the most racist country ever
Touché Edit: @ Th89's post And gummylamb, all eastern Asia countries are pretty racist
