Pretty sure Mattis is smart enough to avoid ground/air intervention with any sovereign country unless its literally last resort. He knows the cost of war and he knows he's putting actual humans both his own and civilians at risk with whatever the armed forces do, and that carries a huge emotional cost

I don't know much about Mattis's history, but he seems to be the only voice of reason in the entire Trump administration. I'm not confident that he will be enough to prevent catastrophe, however. While he might be cautioning Trump towards diplomacy with China, you have to remember that our chief diplomat [I]is Trump[/I] -- the biggest boor our government has ever seen. [B]If[/B] diplomacy is the key to avoiding a war with China, and Trump is our chief diplomat, then we're well and proper fucked.
