Being able to work on passion projects without having to worry about funding or deadlines sounds amazing, i can see why he'd like it
Sounds like any developer's dream. No stress of paying rent, can experiment and fail without worry.
abomination worth 2.5 billion dollars
Really? Holy shit I thought it was in the 100 millions
For what I got when I originally bought the game, it was certainly worth the money, despite me ultimatly getting bored with Vanilla Minecraft, I moved onto Minecraft's huge modding scene which increased my time with the game significantly.
Despite you not really wanting to continue with it, thanks for providing many a good few hours by creating Minecraft Notch.
well, it sure must feel awesome to leave the utter abomination of a program that is minecraft
Most of the people who hate Minecraft already put hundreds of hours into it and got bored of it. This is usually combined either a dislike of the direction the game's development went, a hatred of the young fanbase (which makes it a bad game how) or a desperate need to look cool by not liking a popular thing.

pretty sure he's saying that minecraft is a pile of shit from a programing perspective, not as a game
To be honest, I like minecraft because it pulls kids away from games like call of duty and other M rated titles that little kids shouldn't be playing.

Except it really doesn't. Kids who play cod aren't kids who play MC.
You cynical assholes can say what you want about notch.
* He has no idea how to manage company or community.
* He is a terrible leader.
* He is a terrible CEO.
* Can be sort of a slacker.
But he is a good person at heart, he loves videogames and he loves his fan (from what i've seen) he can't take pressure like. The one week nobody knows your name and the next month EVERYONE IS TALKING ABOUT ME AND HOLY SHIT ALL THIS MONEY. And suddenly over fucking night people have extreme demands from him from a game he didn't even imagine would be successful.
Think about that, you make a game and you won't even imagine it will be successful, it's one of 100's of projects you've made but suddenly everyone talks about it, people demand you to continue to update it, suddenly you absolutely no economical problems what so ever and you are simply stunned. What the fuck do you even do? To be honest i don't even fucking care if he went on vacations all the time, i'd do it myself if i were him. This must have been extremely stressful.
He turned into a fucking millionare in months and after a couple years he's a FUCKING billionare and every fucking adult and child knows who this is.
I still haven't met a child that doesn't know what minecraft is. I can sit at my office and when someone brings their child to the office i ALWAYS hear "Daddy can i play minecraft on your phone?"
And i agree, this game is good it supports in that way that NOT ALL GAMES MAKES PEOPLE INTO KILLERS.
Say what you want but to be honest i'm happy minecraft exists, like fuck.
[editline]19th February 2015[/editline]
Not to mention he had his slut of a girlfriend that tried to take her piece of the pie and leave him.
He never had any obligation to be any of those things, he never set out to be any of those things.
He just struck gold suddenly and didn't really know how to manage it.
He went from being a fat bald nobody in his room paying rent to having a billion dollar worth contract with fucking Microsoft and living in a LA penthouse.
-big post-
Calm down bro. People are saying he sucks at leading/managing but I'm sure they don't mean harm, that would be ignorant.
Truths must be stated, criticism should be made. But those who exaggerate and go the extra mile to belittle Notch as a (in fact, successful) person aren't worth paying attention to.
Except it really doesn't. Kids who play cod aren't kids who play MC.
And you are basing this on what? Except I guess in the temporal sense since it would be very difficult to play MC at the same time as you are playing CoD or the other way around.
And you are basing this on what? Except I guess in the temporal sense since it would be very difficult to play MC at the same time as you are playing CoD or the other way around.
Because the amount of kids on cod or any other fps hasn't lessened.

I played a lot of Rollercoaster Tycoon back in the day, A LOT. I still played fps games too. I think what games like Minecraft do is show gamers there's more to life than just playing an fps. Without Minecraft a whole generation of kids might have grown up thinking GTA and CoD were the pinnacle of fun. It seems to be taking hold, all these building games are just increasing in number all the time.
You haven't experienced a Java garbage collection pause.
A GC pause in Java can be anything from a few milliseconds to a couple hundred milliseconds.
Google gave up on it and just reimplemented everything with ART in Android, because the old GC was causing the UI make people vomit.
Android was never using Sun(Oracle)'s JVM. They implemented their own Java VM called Dalvik and have been using different versions of that since the very first version of Android.
They dropped Dalvik in favor or ART not because of GC, but because of JIT. ART is compiling everything AOT (ahead of time) instead of JIT (just in time). This makes installing apps slower, but running them faster.
That's amazing to see a project he started alone turned around into a 2.5 billion dollar payout + whatever he got while he was working on the game.
Notch should have a custom tshirt made "I sold Minecraft to Microsoft for $2.5 billion and all i got was $1.7 billion and this tshirt".

This is a very early test of an Infiniminer clone I'm working on. It will have more resource management and materials, if I ever get around to finishing it.
It currently runs at about 700 fps for a 256x256x64 tile map.
You can follow development on my blog: http://notch.tumblr.com/
He had no idea this little prototype would have greatly expanded and become widely successful.

They have terrible parents
Minecraft probably became popular because:
A) Notch is a good person whose personality gave rise to a community that was able to share and grow with time and updates
B) Money wasn't the top priority (Ie: He didn't implement some sort of advertising system like Roblox)
C) Minecraft is it's own entity beyond "Digital Legos", it's more about sculpting a world rather then strict creative output (IE: Turning a mountain into a house as apposed to summoning the individual elements of the house into a green plane), which allowed people to capitalize on the LP aspect of Minecraft
However, even though Notch was a crucial element to the growth of the Minecraft community, he has also spent a lot of time moving away from it. The number of times he updated his tumblr decrased, and the number of times he has gone on Vacation increased. Then he handed the game over to Jeb_. Since then, the notion of Notch having any sort of control over any aspect of Minecraft has gone away, which really sucked because the ironic worship of Notch was one of the more fun aspects of the Alpha-Beta community.
I'm really glad that Notch has moved on though, I really like his design philopsy and can't wait for him to start doing things again. If I was him though, I'd hop on a VPN and start posting under a false pseudonym, just because anything Notch dumps onto Twitter will be lapped up by gaming news like it's the word of the pope.

It is, 25 one hundred millions to be exact.

My cousin's 12. CoD and MC are literally the only games he plays.
