(to clarify, i believe that this is a common divide in many ideologies, the more rational scholarly side and the more emotional populist side. we can see it quite clearly in this election on both sides.) trump may be the reason why emotions are high, but that does not change the actions of the people. they're aligning themselves with the left, they're heavily being used as propaganda by the right, and some could say they're one of the more "politically active" camps in the left. dismissing them as just violent hooligans who don't know better is dismissing a growing faction. their use of violence will become a part of leftist ideology if it is tolerated, as ideology is a constantly changing and not just determined by the people studying it.

Totally get what you're saying and I do agree that in general the left has been getting more aggressive and in some cases violent. I guess I am focusing too much on the purely ideological version of leftism rather than the general tone that exists in practice.
