I really hate the treatment animals get in factory farms. I'll be the first to tell you that I love meat but I hate to see this shit. There really needs to be more pressure on these places.
I'm a butcher and seeing this breaks my heart. I love animals, any type. Farm animals have a special place in my heart for several reasons. They're animals and like any type of pet, livestock, etc they should be treated with respect. But they're going to be food at one point or another, so treat them the best to you can will do many things (Increase quality of meat, increase quality of life for the animal), but most importantly it does something for you. It makes the ultimate sacrifice so you can eat daily. That any they may not be as intelligent as us, but they do feel, they have personalities and do have a level of intelligence. There is no reason for all the shit they did, no reason at all. They're just sick individuals with issues. Pigs can be trained and treated like house pets, they're smart, and like any animal have the ability to learn.
I can't watch this video, the look in the pig's eye that was found laying on the ground, crippled, with no water...and the slightest of hope it had when the person was giving it water...but still died. Just the torment and anguish these creatures go through, to think about is incomprehensible. Call me a pussy or whatever but I cried. And it really makes me want to swear off meat.
If you liked the food, the pig didn't die in vain.
If you liked the food, the pig didn't die in vain.
Doesn't excuse the awful treatment of the animals seen in this video.
Although this practice basically needs to occur, at least make the life the animals have somewhat enjoyable.
Doesn't excuse the awful treatment of the animals seen in this video.
Nothing looks out of the ordinary here. I just see people keeping a schedule. What you are seeing is for the most part normal. These are just hippies trying to make industry look bad.
Although this practice basically needs to occur, at least make the life the animals have somewhat enjoyable.
It's not profitable. The price per sow is awful right now. You can pack em' in so long as you have the ability to keep the facilities clean and safe. My automerge... @thisispain: Some people like to laugh as the world burns.
how is it that all these fucked up people end up meat farms
I wish the same thing would happen to those hurting them, I don't care that they're humans, pain is pain
You should be burned at the stake for stepping on ants and inadvertently slaughtering bacteria.
@thisispain: Some people like to laugh as the world burns.
"as the world burns" wow just because you're in a bad situation you have to make everyone else miserable?
If I had the option of paying 5-10 dollars more for meat I know wasn't abused I'd buy it every time over the other. Sort of like the "Cageless" chicken eggs. I'll go out of my way to buy them over the others. I don't know of any meat distributor that sells meat on the fact that it was "open range" or something not confined to these death-camp like conditions.
The interesting thing is that, depending on where you live, you can actually get meat from animals that are better cared for at prices that aren't much worse than supermarket stuff (and in some cases, considerably better). The trick seems to be to get a decent sized chest freezer (they are really not as expensive as you might imagine. To purchase or operate) and then go to a local farm and buy half a cow/pig or whatever other meat you want. Take it home and freeze it. I did it originally because I wanted large amounts of lean meat to make jerky from, but now I aim to get at least 95% of my meat that way. (Harder to control meat sources when eating out). It is nice to see where the cattle come from. I used to be able to get grass fed beef, but the farm changed hands and now no longer sells it. Corn fed cattle suffer as a result of eating corn, so that isn't really ideal. Obviously this method is limited in its usefulness. Many folks don't live anywhere near a farm selling meat directly, and even then they might not always sell it or not sell what they need, or are ultimately just as inhumane as everyone else. As such I don't hold it against anyone who still buys meat the normal way, but everyone should be encouraged to press their representatives for better controls on our meat industry.

As much as I love to support good causes, I simply can't afford the expensive luxury "we treat our animals well" food. Not that I go out the way to buy eggs that say "YEAH WE TORTURE OUR ANIMALS" but I know standard eggs from an average brand don't garuntee you're getting "honest" meats, produce and poultry.

It's all corrupt in every area, from Monsanto and their grotesque seed control to corrupt legislators subsidizing corn crops so that farmers can sell them at less than it costs to produce, to the mass live stock farms as cheap food for the livestock (which is extremely unhealthy) who's owners are best buds with the legislators. The FDA can't even shut down slaughter houses that continually test positive for contamination that get thousands of people in America sick every year. The agriculture business is in shambles and is probably one of the most corrupt industries around.

It's nice, but Ohio really isn't known for its large cattle/etc market. More about agriculture here.

Be on the lookout for candidates who want to fix these issues in your state. This can all be fixed, it's just going to take a huge effort. :)
Let's treat a pig like a god before we kill it, chop it up, fry, and then eat pretty much its entire body. If these small cages and kicks really matter so much why are we even killing them and eating them in the first place, I might as well go be sympathetic to my ham.
That fat woman. Why sit on the pig and possibly break it's legs if what you're trying to do is make it move? Logic. Pretty fucking disgusting. I think Gordon Ramsay says it best...
"It's enough to make anyone turn fucking vegetarian, for God's sake. And I've always sort of knocked vegetarians and vegans for missing out on the most amazing flavour you can get from meat. But you can see why so many people change instantly."
Fucking barbaric. Makes me so fucking happy to be a fucking human.
I usually dont cry to videos like this, and this was no exception. Still horrible though
it's leg was already broken.
My point still stands? How the fuck will sitting on the broken leg make it move?
You should be burned at the stake for stepping on ants and inadvertently slaughtering bacteria.
it's widely accepted that ants, other insects, and microbial life cannot feel pain. pain requires a complex nervous system with many neurons, pain receptors, and a place in the brain to collect information from them to interpret as pain, and insects do not have them

It's more to the point that animals are largely innocent, all they really want to do is mull about all day and eat grass, not giving a fuck. That's why these videos are so damn hard to watch, because the treatment is completely unnecessary for an animal who doesn't know whats going on or why it is been beaten and stored in a fucking box.

I feel so bad because all this animal wants to do is chill and eat grass... But I'm so damn hungry!
Then stop eating them so they can be let go.
you know for a fact that that's not going to happen. it's unrealistic to expect people to stop eating meat, it is a huge part of our diet the industry needs reform, really. livestock should be cared for and have their needs catered to sufficiently until they are ready for slaughter, which should ideally be quick and painless. these "factory farms" should be fucking illegal, it really is criminal what they are doing to these animals
Then stop eating them so they can be let go. I feel so bad because all this animal wants to do is chill and eat grass... But I'm so damn hungry!
Are you a vegetarian? I'm curious.

[editline]10th May 2012[/editline]
Are you a vegetarian? Especially if you expect a species that abuses itself and everything around it on a daily basis to.
