I have a severely autistic brother, and this is why you should drive and not fly.
because they cant help it? like someone with tourettes syndrome might have a vocal tick that makes them yelp or something, there isnt really anything they can do to help that, so it isn't really fair to tell them off.
I knew a guy who has Tourettes. Some fucking idiot had the nerve to go up to him and say 'You have to stop the swearing right now, my kids don't have to hear your stupid violent nonsense'. He couldn't even explain that he can't help it.
I have worked with autistic kids before and I will say that this is the mothers fault. If she knows that her daughter is capable of behavior like this then she should be prepared to handle it, she should not expect the airline to accommodate her. The fact they were willing to give her the hot food is generous on the airline's part.
More like the mother should have never even taken a flight with the kid. Nobody should take chances when it comes to stuff like this...even when you have precautions ready.
Article misses this nice quote from her facebook post Sounds like a reason for concern right there. Also if she wanted hot food and knew she'd want hot food, why didn't they just buy first class tickets instead of asking for stuff not included in the economy class tickets... [editline]ads[/editline] My little brother has autism, whenever we travel with him, especially on flights, we always make sure he'll be comfortable beforehand, not as an after thought. Unfortunately it is a thing that causes issues like violent outbursts, people with autism do in fact need special treatment as much as people like to pretend to treat them the same as everyone else, it doesn't work like that.
Do you know how much first class tickets are? I costs me like 1.5k to fly back home on economy. Business class is like 5k, first class jumps to 10k. That is such a stupid comment/solution...not everyone has money to throw at their problems.

It looks to be a shitty situation. Traveling and having someone who is violent sitting next to you is unacceptable - though there is NO evidence that she was violent, aside from a youtube comment. If she was just being noisy or making others uncomfortable then the wrong action was taken, in my opinion.
It's shit when you're stuck on a plane and severely agitated because there's nowhere you can really go. I have issues with my ears popping when I'm landing if I don't clean them out sufficiently before the flight (I literally mean standing with my head tilted sideways for a solid minute or so per ear, not just basic hygiene), they hurt severely if we head down too quickly. It's shit because I hate making noises and squirming around because it disrupts everyone, but I literally cannot avoid it and I don't know what else I can do other than shell out money to get my ears syringed.

I mean yes I understand the whole "can't help it" or "can't do anything about it" but to be honest I've never really understood why should others stay patient if you didn't bother preventing problems you knew will happen. (And don't say because it's too expensive, perhaps then you should choose alternative travel method? ) I am not being an ass here, I am just saying basic common sense really: If I buy ticket and get on the plane, I expect decent environment, some children noises are acceptable but possible "violent outbursts" - no, I wouldn't be okay with it, there are limits, and you as a parent should ensure problems don't arise during flight. tl;dr - Why should other passengers in same class put up with something if you didn't ensure problems will not arise (like buying first class ticket or choosing alternative way), you know child with autism doesn't give you a priority seat, it means you have to take better caution and care.
As expensive as airline tickets are you'd think that something like the food would be cheaper or better. A ticket for 10 people by themselves can nearly cover fuel costs and the rest goes straight into the company and their employees. Considering that airlines often have 3-3-3 setups, there's more than enough income for them to maintain the planes, get new ones, etc, let alone providing better meals and the like for longer trips.

Parents who treat their children who have autistic or down syndrome as if they were perfectly normal children can't be any worse First, they aren't "normal" children. I might sound like an extremist KKK nazi son of a fucking bitch saying this, but autistic and children with down syndrome are not "norma"l. They are not capable of the same basic reasoning and social skills the other 98% of the population can. I'm not saying that due to them not being able to be nuclear engineers, they aren't normal. Hell, some autistic children will have intellectual capabilities that will far surpass any other guy. But overall, they are not on par with others. Second, treating them as normal, as having the same skills than other kids is not something good. In my private school we had a classmate with DS, from age....7 till 12 he was quite on par with us, played with us and had a lot of fun, we even did some homeschool together. See, the thing is, from age 12 onwards, the school forced -in a way- parents who had children with DS to take them to another school PROPERLY equipped with everything to PROPERLY educate them. And the fuckwits -because I can't find another word to describe them- parents of my classmate, forced the school to keep him in on grounds that "He was perfectly normal as any other kid of his age and capable of the same things". Well gues what: As each year went on by starting from age 12, we grew even more apart from him and later on in the last years, he recluded himself and had to be personally followed/Assisted by another teacher. The reason? He thought -thanks to his fuckwit parents- he was the same as us, and started to develop feelings of anger and resentment because he couldn't do a simple equation or understand the philosophy authors we saw in class. He couldn't or wouldn't want to understand why he wasn't capable of the same things we did. And guess who were responsible of filling his head with BS? So third, FEAR OF AUTISM my fucking ass. The airline shouldn't be held responsible for the inmature and irresponsible parents who don't know how to control their children. It's not their duty to know EXACTLY what each passenger needs. They don't discriminate passengers on a "autist-or-not" basis. If you misbehave, sorry, out of the fucking plane. Autist, or not. As said before, you are responsible for your own children. If you know they can become aggresive and lash out if they are hungry BECAUSE THEY ARE AUTIST, then you better warn the airline BEFORE getting on that plane or YOU bring the food for the kid. Being in midair and saying "Oh look, I didn't give a fuck about the possible consequences of bringing my kid onboard and not having any hot food, so comply or else everything goes FUBAR" doesn't excuse you. /rantoff PS: I know the first 2 parts don't have that much to do with the news, but since it's being talked here, I just wanted to comment on it. [editline]11th May 2015[/editline]
They are there to make as much money as possible, like any other business.
And in many cases, only a couple of airlines make a buck...the others run with a deficit if I'm not mistaken. I also hate that "Pop" followed by a strong feeling of drill being inserted in my ear.

He might be angry. He might be an asshole. The chances of him having a mental illness are really low compared to him just being an ass.
Mother is stupid for not preparing before getting on the flight. If you know that your daughter is going to scratch, hurt people and scream if she didn't get a hot meal, then she should've prepared before hand by either buying food in the terminal for her daughter or making prior arrangements with airline so she is reasonably accomodated.
