quite the dedication, and it certainly makes a statement when he's had his plan available for years and even called ahead to let all the right people know he'd be doing it
I recall seeing on the news he was actually flying ~25mph, and mentioned he was worried about being shot down along the way because 'even a kid with a BB gun could knock [him] out of the sky'

You bring out the fucking bomb squad for a gyrocopter.
How did we get to this point?

Well it does have a mysterious box underneath the fuel tank, worst case it explodes and burns the grass. But really those are letters not letterbombs

because it might have a bomb on it
I meant the fact that only a few decades ago if this was pulled off at worst he'd driven off the mall, probably detained for the day, fined and and that would be it. Here we have the bomb squad called out, part of the city put in lockdown, various emergency services scrambled and a heated debate on why a fucking anti-aircraft system of all things did not blast him out of the sky.
All because of a bunch of senile grey haired twats believe they are god and fear the day anyone else tries to dictate how the world turns (or worse, if people try to.......share.)
because it might have a bomb on it
From someone named "Explosions" and with that avatar, I find that statement hilariously ironoic.
Also, being DC and all, aren't all the buildings lining the mall basically bombproof at this point?

We might as well all be terrorists. God Bless America!
This guy has enormous stones. I'm really surprised he didn't get shot at.

Yeah, it certainly didn't have anything to do with the fact that an aircraft willingly flew towards a protected structure that has been targeted by aircraft terrorism in the past. It has something to do with an old person conspiracy (why did you bring this up lol?)

So it couldn't possibly have a bomb?
Why does the bombproof-ness of the buildings mean that we should just ignore threats?

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night nor the US government

It was a gyrocopter, landing on the front lawn, after he had already announced his intent. Secret Service agents aren't just itching to shoot anyone that looks the least bit suspicious, they're trained to use minimum necessary force. If it were an unannounced Cessna at 200mph going straight for the Capitol then yes, the reaction would probably be different.
So as long as he isn't being overtly aggressive, he's not an immediate threat, but the craft could still be carrying something like a bomb or Anthrax, so they're cautious all the same and send in EOD.
Reminds me of that german kid who grabbed a Cessna, called it a day and landed in motherfucking RED SQUARE during the 80's...
Hope they give the guy a recognition or something. Better him than a fleet of gyrocopters steered by flying terrorists
A german brother also flew an ultralight over the damn berlin wall to pick his other brother and fly him back to the west.

Didn't you know? You're a terrorist until proven innocent. A kid hacking an online game? Terrorist. Pirating? Terrorist. Disagree with anything the gov'mnt say? Terrorist.

Literally none of these things are relevant.

Yes, a nutter flies a gyrocopter into capitol hill with an unknown package. Obviously this is just a bunch of senile grey haired twats believing they are god and not an understandable threat.
I mean come on. You can sit all high and mighty thinking "oh wow aren't I more clearheaded than all these people" but this could have been a major threat to the public.

But that's what you get when you leave a page open for hours and don't refresh it.
I love those flying lawn chair-type gyros. Despite looking like a deathtrap they are supposedly rather safe. Even if the engine is cut mid-air the propellers will continue to spin until you just plop back on the ground. At least that's what my dad told my mother when he decided he wanted one. :v:
How come no defense system shot it down? I'm sure you could deliver a decent blast even with something that small.

I would imagine it would not be very wise to be either a) Be shooting lots of bullets into the air in a crowded metropolitan area, or b) having a missile explode in a crowded metropolitan area
It seems that they'd at least hold firing until they're 100% certain something terrible is going to happen if they don't.
I want a goddamn gyrocopter.

Fun fact: this thing was actually fully functional and the scenes with it flying around weren't faked except for one which was shot from the pilot's point of view, the camera was too heavy for the gyrocopter to carry so they had to mount some garbage that looked like the control stick and all on the side of a helicopter and film from there.
