US Navy has rail-guns in development/maybe deployment? That's pretty much the best weapon over long ranges and against heavy armor we have now.
Also, why does this has to be something massive and catastrophic? Maybe 50 years ago, aliens discovered our planet and decided to go check it out. Maybe it's a survey mission. Maybe it's a fucking bachelor party, come to rape some goats or something.
