Why is this a debate?
"I am not trained to do this rescue. But I'm going to do it anyways."
* Wades out into the water - suicidal man becomes combative and / or my lack of proper training in water rescues puts me in danger. *
"Oh no, help!"
* Thus starts a chain reaction of untrained people becoming victims in the water. *
What puzzles me, is that the drowning man was in the water for an hour, and I highly doubt that he was trained. It couldn't have taken much training to save him. It's interesting because apparently he was too close to shore for the Coast Guard to save him, but too far away for the police and fire crews to save him. What I'd like to know is why the Coast Guard isn't trained, or have the gear, to save someone in the water. They were at the scene of the drowning.

you don't get it.
I really don't think the budget should go towards this. It's a ridiculous amount to allocate over a few rare incidents. This guy wanted to die. If he wanted to live he could have gotten closer to shore and received help.
The firefighters are far from fault here. The man wanted to die and even if they were to intervene, none had any equipment or training and basic swimming lessons aren't going to help you carry a large man out of the bay in cold temperatures as he tries to fight back.
Firefighters did the best they could. Any of you saying you'd drop your balls and dive in after him are fools and thinking in a heroic fantasy tale instead of reality. Reality is that your scrawny asses would probably freeze or drown as you tried to drag a suicidal and combative man across the bay. It's a reality check. You're not any braver than the firefighters who fight daily to save lives. Nothing could have been done in this scenario.

I'd rather have only one dead body than two.
