Based Microsoft. But seriously, that's real nice. :)
But that's the home edition right?
But that's the home edition right?
Yeah, do you need to connect to a domain?
Does running it in a virtual machine count :tinfoil:.
If you activated the OS with a Microsoft account, it will probably count for that particular Microsoft acc.
As soon as I found out about this, I immediately installed Windows 10 Insider Preview on my machine. (After backing up all my stuff, of course). Definitely enjoy using it right now. :D
I read this before I went to work, now I'm just grabbing the drivers I'll need. Had the tech preview on my netbook since late last year, and it was running so smoothly. It also ran really well in the virtual machine I had on here.
Woot it worked!
It's good. get it. Also, my copy is on build 10074, how do I get to the build they mentioned in the article.
If anyone gets the message: We couldn't update the system reserved partition. I used MiniTool Partition Wizard to increase the size of the System Reserved partition. Made my C drive 512Mb smaller, and allocated that to the reserve; had to reboot with the program though.
Yeah it will bitch at you if it thinks it may have issues. Like my Intel 915G graphics on my laptop. ITS TOTALLY READY BUT THE 915G GRAPHICS IS GONNA HAVE ISSUES.
Intel GMA 3150 works fine, bitch
I heard rumours about it from my friend who's an insider. Guess it was true. Really nice move from Microsoft. I already used tech previews, but older ones were a bit buggy. Rare random BSODs, FPS drop in some games (like NFS HP 2010, it was just unplayable on 10), etc. But with an offer like that, I'm gonna try using it again.
Anybody else with a legit OEM version getting the offer? I'm not, and I can't help but feel a bit cheated.
I just uninstalled Windows 10. Its kinda unstable and makes everything run slower. Windows 7 runs way way more faster then Windows 10. Does anyone now When Microsoft is gonna relelase a better version? The April build isnt really good
Instead of doing all theses competitions why not just make it free? Because suddenly all theses Businesses, Schools and private users will be switching to it because it's free and the best out there. Pretty much you've got the entire market share and if your really set on marking money from selling it, you could just say in like four years time for those who didn't get it free will now have to pay.

For it to be profitable in the current free method they need to get as many people on it as soon as possible. 1 year gives a minor sense of urgency without worrying the average user.
If I virtualise Windows 10 preview will I still get the free copy of Windows?
I've not got the icon on my laptop yet, how long should I wait? [editline]21st June 2015[/editline] Screw it I might just install the test build, will it later update on the 29th too?
If I virtualise Windows 10 preview will I still get the free copy of Windows?
apparently yeah, and like some said, since they're asking for your account, it means they'll probably hook it to your account. i hope that means we can just redownload the full version and reinstall it on the computer proper.
If they release a July build of Windows 10, i will probably reinstall it.
Nice to see I can just move over, would of been a pain to reinstall.
As long as you are running an Insider Preview build and connected with the MSA you used to register, you will receive the Windows 10 final release build. Once you have successfully installed this build, you will also be able to clean install on that PC from final media if you want to start over fresh. It’s important to note that only people running Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 can upgrade to Windows 10 as part of the free upgrade offer.*
What. So you still need to have legit 7/8 to use this or that you need it just to upgrade, and can install legit 10 from scratch if you use preview?
They had actually already been saying this for a while, just never quite so explicitly. At one point a month or so ago Gabe said you could upgrade straight from the preview without using a code, but I guess that wasn't as clear as this.
That links directly to this exact thread.
Oops. Ty, I fixed it But seriously, I think it's a really bad idea to have an .exe install this update to your windows without even a confirmation screen. I thought it was some kind of iso downloader. At first I thought it was just my stupid mistake, but the link I posted earlier confirms several people have had this issue. Bad idea by Microsoft.
Is it tied to the account or the computer, it sounds like if you install the preview build it'll just remain there. I'd like windows 10, but I don't want to install a broken version because I may not be able to work on stuff.
Can you tell if its worked? I have just installed the latest test build on a VM and signed in with my microsoft account, is that all I need to do?
I'm still wondering how upgrading to Windows 10 will work if you already have another OS installed on your system, since apparently (?) you cannot install other operative systems on your PC if you got Windows 10 installed.
Seems you've heard some mis-information. Remember the Secure Boot feature that coincided with Windows 8? Well OEM's are getting the option to secure their BIOS so end-users won't be able to disable it, and the change is coinciding with Windows 10. Beyond supporting that change, Windows 10 has nothing to do with it. If you don't use secure boot, it won't affect you. If you're on a machine that lets you disable secure boot, nothing will change. It will only affect OEM machines built after Windows 10's release, if they choose to secure their system this way. Windows 10 does not inherently prevent dual-booting or replacing the OS.
What is it with Microsoft avoiding the concept of giving away Windows completely? They've always addressed it as they're serving a specific niche. "Everyone who has Windows 8 or 7 get it free" "Oh, and everyone who's a pirate gets it too." "Hell, if you even test it you'll land a copy on us." It's blatantly obvious Windows 10 is going to be free, why are they avoiding it?
Perhaps it's just a way to get everyone on 10 as soon as possible. That way instead of people going "eh I'll do it later" it becomes "might as well do it now before the offer's up".
