i'm probably going out on a limb here, but NK reportedly has more than enough artillery to target both military instillation and civilian population centers. i'd say it would be more of a retaliatory or demoralizing attack than anything else, its sort of like MAD except without nuclear weapons, basically the north is saying if you attack us, we'll kill your people
Now we have to turn back to Sitkero's post above and we see the absurdity of trying to destroy a modern city with artillery. It's not a feasible scenario, and continuing to buy into it shuts down discussion on the topic because war is instantly removed from the table of options of dealing with North Korea.

Any situation where NK gets into a war is a loose loose proposition because they'd be annihilated while the south by virtue of having such enormous population densities would suffer huge death tolls from even modest assaults from the north
Eh NK can only play defensive tho, the geography helps a lot

Any situation where NK gets into a war is a loose loose proposition because they'd be annihilated while the south by virtue of having such enormous population densities would suffer huge death tolls from even modest assaults from the north
Outside the larger missile launchers, NK does not have the artillery to disrupt/destroy major transit hubs and infrastructure through shelling without making significant advances into South Korean territory, the estimated number of launchers they do have capable of striking from within North Korean territory ranges from less than two hundred to little more than six hundred, and mobilization of enough of them to have a significant impact isn't likely to go unnoticed There are a large number of large rural and agricultural communities near the DMZ, though, so if for some reason they did decide to attack the civilian population, those would be at risk, but I would think there's at least some loose guidelines for evacuation in that event, being so close to the border and all But all that is still leaving out the fact that artillery is kinda really shitty for these things, artillery is a support weapon, it's really good for shelling enemy positions and softening fortifications and things like that, but it's not so great for sowing mass destruction and chaos, even the big missile launchers are a lot more effective when turned towards military targets with lots of strategically important things like ammunition and fuel and vehicles, though they do have some value as terror weapons outside of that What you really need for that is a proper bomber wing

Like, very angry. So, considering that North doesn't stand a chance of winning this war (i don't believe China will risk starting a full scale war with the US just to back up a freeloader country), this would just make things worse for them when it's over.
South Korea probably has the locations of the artillery as well, or is at least tracking them in some kind. They might get a few salvos off but they will probably get disabled very fast in the event of war.
Actually, I wonder if NK even has the budget for this. They already have their hands full with the War on Atlantis.
Yeah but they're giving Atlantis a hell of a pounding, you can't even see it from space anymore!
If that really is the case then there has to be a point where's its simply cheaper to go wipe out the NK government with drone strikes then to continue to deal with their non-stopped babbling.
It wouldn't be cheaper because China would come to their defense. However, China's said that if NK is the aggressor then they won't back them up. Being able to level a city in a day or two would be absurd, but I'll be damned if even decades-old artillery can't turn a city to rubble.
