I have read about this loads over the past few years but this has been one of the most interesting and informative articles on it.
As for the overkill with the police, I think it was because of their suspicion of him being involved with the Sasser worm.

I think the leak was actually a good thing, I compare screenshots etc of the leak with what they eventually released. If I recall correctly HL2 was close to release when it got leaked.

The Irish hate the English (The Troubles etc)
The French hate the English (Hundred years war, battle of agincourt, napolean etc)

Also the Japanese, Chinese (we owned hong kong) various African countries (Either told to hate the English by the French/Germans/Spanish or colonised by the English) Egypt, Tunisia, Russia, most of Eastern Europe, Portugal... and now we've added Iraq and Afghanistan to the list of countries who ain't too hot on us, but don't quite have a rivalry yet.

Theft is theft, I don't think the law distinguishes between someone stealing something worth hundreds of millions of dollars through the internet or by any other means.

I think they're well within their rights not to give him a job. He did hack into their servers, and caused (whether directly or indirectly) the loss of how many dollars. I think they should give him a job, too, but I think calling Gabe a douche for not doing so is going way too far.
