You're not confusing Java with Javascript, right?I've been with multiple banks and have never came across one that uses actual Java.
Don't you know? Java is just short for javascript: [t]http://i.imgur.com/MilKmny.jpg[/t]
The most important question is: How will Chrome users play RuneScape 2007?
Oh and those that preferred Adobe Reader will have to use Google's alternative instead.
If they're in Chromium, what's to stop the Firefox developers from looking at the source code and creating a Firefox compatible version?
Firefox is not the only other web browser, and the problem to begin with is people being forced to support google's standard all of a sudden rather than having something a web standards group has agreed upon
You're not confusing Java with Javascript, right? I've been with multiple banks and have never came across one that uses actual Java.
No it's Java. The pages even have jsf extension.
android is literally based on java [editline]25th November 2014[/editline] i already didnt use chrome, and now i definitely wont be
Dalvik and ART =/= Java Dalvik and ART may be based on the Java VM, but there are significant differences. More so with ART. In addition, this change only effects Java within web browsers (Java applets), which are completely irrelevant to Dalvik and ART.
We got something similar in Sweden called BankID. I believe it runs entirely as a seperate application though. It's still fucking terrible because it doesn't support 64 bit browsers so I have to fallback to Internet Explorer every time I need to log in with it somewhere. :v:
I literally just used BankID to pay my bills, using Windows 8 and a 64 bit browser (chrome).
I haven't encountered java in years on the web anyways
You mean you don't still play Runescape on the daily?
Guess I'll have to stop using Chrome then.
You're on Windows, so if you want to keep using Chrome, you can install IETab just for Java sites. EDIT: It's a pretty cool extension, because you can set "auto URLs". Just add all of your sites that use Java to the auto URL list, and then they'll automatically load in IE Tab.
Unity is going WebGL sooo
You mean you don't still play Runescape on the daily?
Runescape has HTML5 now right?
Runescape has HTML5 now right?
"Haych"TML5 is not where they want it to be.
Flash too please
Java as a front end app (java applet) has not been used in years, and for good reasons. Java as a programming language is still widely used on the backend on many stuff though - any software developer will tell you that. The misconception of Java not being used or being a weak language is totally wrong, consumers just aren't exposed to it.
Don't worry you guys, Google totally loves the open web. So what if they propose replacing half of NPAPI's functionality with Chrome-exclusive features?
Yeah, it's really a shame it's so exclusive and not available to anyone else
"Haych"TML5 is not where they want it to be.
Well, it's a year before java support is gone completely. that's plenty of time for them to focus on it and get it done
It's like this in Norway also. Will have to install another browser on my parents computer.
Assuming you're talking about BankID, they're working on getting rid of it. On some websites it's already being used. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6O-o4476do - BankID without java
Flash too please
Sites still use flash.

Doesn't really surprise me, Google dropped NPAPI on Linux a while back and got Adobe to to follow suite, meaning Flash on Linux is now a Chrome only plugin. It's ActiveX all over again.
If they're in Chromium, what's to stop the Firefox developers from looking at the source code and creating a Firefox compatible version?
There's nothing legally stopping them, it's just a really crappy way of supporting it (i.e. it's easier to implement a spec than to try and copy code somebody else wrote) Every little change has to be re-implemented, behaviour has to be monitored to see how global state affects functions, etc. Edit: Google did actually have a PPAPI spec at some point, it just doesn't match what Google implemented, and there's also a bunch of undocumented stuff Google has no interest in making work cross-browser. Edti 2: Also, Mozilla would actually like to deprecate NPAPI too, but their solution is to make plugins into sandboxed JS that render via WebGL or such, like pdf.js or Shumway. So their solution would work in any browser and anybody could implement it, etc.
I never thought that I'd pray for a version of IE to not be a pile of crap, bu-oh wait, Bing. :suicide:
Actually it's pretty fucking secure, if you wanted to impersonate another person you'd need: Full social security number The password, which has some pretty strict rules about length and characters included. And should you somehow get past that you'd also need their key card, basically when you have gone past number and password it prompts you to enter a number from that key card. So there is a physical element of the security.
If I were a robber I could probably get all three while you were out of the house, honestly. Unless you have some amazing security system or all your neighbors are annoying busybody thundercunts there's nothing stopping me from being a bumpkey badass and popping open your locks. As long as I appear confident and like I belong there, most people will never question my presence and I will get away with robbing you blind. Never, ever treat any security measures like they're going to stop anyone. People make it, companies make it, society makes it, and it bites them in the ass every time and they wonder why their expensive new thing didn't protect them. Security is an active thing, so all of your passive measures are just going to deter and delay, they will only deter retards and petty thieves.
Sites still use flash.
They shouldn't
I never thought that I'd pray for a version of IE to not be a pile of crap, bu-oh wait, Bing. :suicide:
IE have been trying really hard to shake off the stigma that they're terrible lately and I have to grudgingly admit that the last time I formatted my PC, I spent more than a few days perfectly content with IE until I missed the extensions too much and re-installed Chrome. They have a ways to go, but it's still not too bad in a pinch. Besides, the Bing Default thing can be changed with a few settings alterations to be set back to Google and all is well again.

Hell, why not try a shot at developing it for OS X too? Nadella would probably like that idea considering the whole "Microsoft everywhere" philosophy he seems to be pushing instead of the "Windows everywhere" philosophy of the Gates/Ballmer era.

Going by their AMA's atleast, the IE team at Microsoft seem to be earnest in their attempt to catch up with other browsers - the only thing that keeps me from using it at this point as a casual surfer is the lack of extensions, which means no adblock and that's a pain in the rear. The irony is that Microsoft Office on Windows Phones itself is gimped compared to other platforms at this point :v: (Fun Fact: On a windows phone you can't attach any file other than a photo when sending an e-mail, except through a roundabout method). That having been said, I still like WP just because it has a nice OS design style. I wouldn't mind Internet Explorer coming to OSX - shit, they could make a trade deal where Microsoft tells Apple to make a version of iTunes that isn't a horrific pile of burning turds, and in return, Internet Explorer makes an appearance on OSX. I think that would be a win - slightly less win (for the Mac folks)!

Modern IE is really quite good, there's still some room for improvements on how they handle things though.
In Denmark we have this unversal identification system called NemID(EasyID) that is used to get access to pretty much everything state/municipal stuff, such as tax and even stuff like changing your address, logging into web-bank and shit like that. It runs on Java. Guess I'll have to stop using Chrome then.
There is no reason whatsoever for that to run on Java. Maybe this will prompt them to update it.
There is no reason whatsoever for that to run on Java.
