In Denmark we have this unversal identification system called NemID(EasyID) that is used to get access to pretty much everything state/municipal stuff, such as tax and even stuff like changing your address, logging into web-bank and shit like that. It runs on Java. Guess I'll have to stop using Chrome then.
I don't think NemID is limited to Java, because with Danske Bank you can login with NemID with HTML5. Although on government websites i had to login with Java everywhere even tho it's the same system, so they will hopefully change that, because updating java all the time is annoying. Edit: By the way, my mobile bank app also uses NemID, and since it's android i doubt it uses java.

Google mainly supports a Java-based SDK (the normal "Android SDK") and a C/C++ based SDK (the "Native Development Kit" or "NDK"). Google discourages the use of the NDK unless it's necessary, and I doubt the app was built with a third-party compiler for C# or something, so it probably is in fact Java. That said, I will once again point out that this only has an effect on Java applets. Desktop Java programs and Android apps are unaffected.
Sounds awfully insecure.
Not really. It probably uses a combination of token, password and other security authentication. My bank also uses java for internet banking. Except I need a password, certificate and keysequence I get to my phone on login.
Java as a front end app (java applet) has not been used in years, and for good reasons. Java as a programming language is still widely used on the backend on many stuff though - any software developer will tell you that. The misconception of Java not being used or being a weak language is totally wrong, consumers just aren't exposed to it.
I built a biometric solution for web using a java applet just so it could run on chrome. Guess that's going to the shitter.

Good thing Chrome doesn't work on my PC anymore and I've already made the switch to Firefox.
