I think they should just be illegal, I guess this is one step closer to that
I dislike people smoking in public because it stinks / is bad for you, but making tobacco illegal would be a terrible idea. The shit would hit the fan BIG TIME. I mean, we're talking riots on the streets and shit.
make cigarettes illegal, which would be the most efficient way to discourage smoking.. kinda
Yea I bet that would work as well as prohibition in America back in the early 1900s.
It's illegal to smoke in a public place here. So I don't see the problem any more.
It's illegal to smoke indoors in a public place.
oh shit if this reaches cali i might be able to actually see inside of smoke shops now from the outside
It's illegal to smoke indoors in a public place.
Illegal to smoke at Bus Shelters too, if you didn't know. And hospital property.
Illegal to smoke at Bus Shelters too, if you didn't know. And hospital property.
Yeah. I don't remember where I read it, but I think it applies to anywhere with a ceiling and 2 walls. So any kind of alcove or whatever. It's good that people can't smoke in train stations at least.
If they're going to make cigarette displays illegal, they may as well make alcohol displays illegal. Alcohol is easier to obtain, cheaper, and has even worse short-term and long-term effects. Fuck, they may as well go all out and ban every beverage but water, since they know what's good for us and are only trying to help.
smoking is addictive and smokers get all angry and shit when they don't smoke for a while. i'd say that's close enough
You've never met a smoker before, have you?
my dad is one so yes I have
You're dad isn't all smokers then is it?
people who write on the internet about quitting smoking mention they got angry and shit when they didn't smoke so that is pretty conclusive? I doubt they were lying
Depends entirely on personality. I've smoked before and I'm not addicted nor am I particularly tense :smug:
I dont need my goverment to tell me what is good for me.

Yeah if I want to lick toys from china to get lead poisoning I damn well should be able to

In England is alcohol limited to liquor stores and bars only, or can you buy it in supermarkets like the states?
If the former, alcohol displays kind of already are illegal.
When this 'product' is a main cause of cancer, and costs millions on health care costs, they should take steps. I agree it shouldn't be banned, but it shouldn't be allowed to be without restrictions when it's a known carcinogenic.
There have already been so many regulations and efforts to get the message out. I am not from the UK, but I can assume there are warnings on the packs, that the risks are well outlined in health classes, and that there are likely many TV and radio parts that highlight that smoking tobacco has dangers. People are informed about all of the dangers of smoking tobacco and are choosing to smoke out of their own free will. This measure would be the government overstepping their bounds by trying to affect a person's own informed free will.
If you disagree, tell me where the line should be drawn with governmental regulation over products which may have negative effects. Should the government be doing this with anything of similar danger?

To be fair... it's a drug. And it causes pollution and second hand smoke can kill.
Yeah if I want to lick toys from china to get lead poisoning I damn well should be able to.
Which is hyperbole and also it also does not describe a similar situation because typically people are not aware that the toys contain lead (until the news gets hold of it) and because there are not supposed to be dangers with toys. With smoking tobacco and consuming alcohol, people are aware of the dangers and what the products contain. What is in cigarettes usually isn't as known though, and I'd like legislation to force them to print it on the product.
If you want to make the choice to lick lead, go ahead. If a company wants to sell lead tablets for you to lick, let them, as long as they include the potential dangers on the packaging.

It's required in Canada. Packages of cigarettes have "toxic emissions/unit" on the box.
To be fair... it's a drug. And it causes pollution and second hand smoke can kill.
"It's a drug" is no argument at all. Stating that means nothing. The effects on pollution as far as the air goes are so very minuscule to be concerned with. I do think believe that there should be measures to prevent public property from being affected because the butts can have a deteriorating effect on the soil. Second hand smoke killing is complete and total myth. I've gone through this entire argument a number of times. Look it up yourself. If you aren't convinced, I'll be back later to argue. I've got to go as of now.

That's good. As far as I know, it isn't like that in the US, it just has a warning.

Except that second hand smoking kills other people, so fuck off.
It'll help current smokers and people giving up in that they won't be reminded of cigarettes when the go into the shop. It'll potentially stop some youngsters starting purely because they won't know what to look for.
When they see their empty carton, they will be reminded
Canada's way ahead of you.

I have nothing against people smoking in their own homes, outdoors, or in designated smoking areas of restaurants/bars. Hiding cigarettes really isn't going to do anything.
http://quitsmoking.about.com/cs/secondhandsmoke/a/secondhandsmoke.htm
Yeah I get a good laugh at the people who say second hand smoke isn't dangerous.
I have nothing against people smoking in their own homes, outdoors, or in designated smoking areas of restaurants/bars. Hiding cigarettes really isn't going to do anything.
What about people who smoke around their children? Or their friends children? Or an apartment building, with a roommate who doesn't smoke?
And the fact that tobacco companies are allowed to sell a drug that is actually addictive, unlike alchohol and cannabis, and has proven health risk to not only smokers, but to those around them, is so wrong that I can't even describe it.
What about people who smoke around their children? Or their friends children? Or an apartment building, with a roommate who doesn't smoke?
Parents should go outside or into another room to smoke if they have children but I'm not about to advocate banning people from smoking on their own property.
You shouldn't keep the bleach on the bottom shelf if you have a kid but there's no law against it.
Is there a little catch for Wales? Or is this going out across the whole country at one time?
I dont see exactly what the difference will be but hopefully it will end up with less smokers.
My dad has been smoking heavily in the house for my entire life and I have no health problems. I'm not offering this anecdote as evidence against the "horrors" of second-hand smoke, just putting that out there.

If anything, it'll make people smoke more. People initially smoke to look cool and then get hooked on it. The more people paint cigarettes as the worst thing ever made and say that it kills babies and shit, the more people will want to smoke them. It's not that hard to figure out.

Yea I guess your right. The opposite happened to a country (cant remember which one but will look) after they legalized drugs. Not only did hard drugs go down but so did pot.
Then why the hell don't they legalize and tax drugs instead of wasting tax dollars in the futile war against them?
Because the government is highly influenced by right realism.

Just going to say, in Canada, they have to hide the cigarette displays and it's really not that bad. The packs do have warnings, etc, but they're just hidden in a shelf behind the cashier. Not that bad really.

Same boat. My dads smoked a pack a day for 55 years almost now, and he smoked around me all my life, and I'm healthier than most of my friends. It's not bullshit, but it's not conclusive to say second hand smoke kills.
