... Is it bad that I just applied for Wal-Mart (they were hiring in my area)?
A job is still a job , man. I remember a few months back I worked at some local cafe and the conditions were shitty. Last summer I would work 7 days a week for a little while with $6.00/Hour wages. I had no benefits (couldn't grab anything to eat or drink without paying full price) My boss was an extremely conservative ex-marine religious freak. My political views lean a little to the right, but this guy took it to an unbearable extreme. He would scream at the other employees and throw food and shit then start to preach religion. I tried to stay there as long as possible cause it was still a job, but my grades started taking a dive (all AP classes) and I was getting so stressed it was unhealthy and eventually couldn't even think straight anymore and one day when cleaning the meat slicer, which you have to be 18 to clean and I was 16 at the time, I kind of sliced open my middle finger which sucked and in the hospital I finally decided I just couldn't work there anymore. TL;DR: a job anywhere is still a job and you shouldn't regret it unless it starts to take a toll on your health.
It feels really odd to me that there are places where people don't bag your groceries.
You won't find a grocery store anywhere in Scandinavia which bags the groceries for you, unless you're like 90 and can't use your arms or something. Having your stuff bagged for you sounds like something straight out of the 50s :v:
Fuck wal-mart. Pay me $7.50 to unload a goddamn semi-truck in a hot ass store for 8 hours, kiss my dick.
I'd be pretty happy to take your job.
Wal-Mart had Super Mario Bros Wii and other old wii games for like 40 dollars still
They still to this day sell DC Universe Online for $40.
I have one right next to my house, it kicks ass and they have a massive buckets of fucking candy section.
No one has mentioned Aldi? They not only have you bag your own stuff but also charge you for the bag... They even have carts that require a 25cent refundable deposit to use.
We go to WinCo every time we're up in Idaho, as we were yesterday. I love that they sell those bags of chips that say "$2 Only!" for $1.60.
What, there's grocery stores that bag them for you? :v: [editline]15th August 2013[/editline] That's pretty weird.
Some americans are too lazy to bag and just stand there while you run out of space to place items on the conveyor belt.
There are laws in the US that say you can't undercut prices too much, or sell things too cheap (Which is stupid). So I wouldn't be surprised if Wal Mart filed some sort of complaint about this, if the prices really are so much cheaper
There are laws in the US that say you can't undercut prices too much, or sell things too cheap (Which is stupid). So I wouldn't be surprised if Wal Mart filed some sort of complaint about this, if the prices really are so much cheaper
Um, no. These laws don't exist. Like most companies we have laws against import dumping (such as x country selling steel in America for less then what it costs that x country to produce) But stores are allowed to sell at whatever price they choose. It's a common practice to price a few items at or below cost to draw in customers.
Fuck yeah, WINCO. Way the hell better than Walmart, it's clean, and it doesn't smell funny. Also, they employees are well paid. [editline]15th August 2013[/editline] They also just remodeled the Local WINCO.
While all these factors help WinCo compete with Walmart on price, what really might scare the world’s largest retailer is how WinCo treats its employees. In sharp contrast to Walmart, which regularly comes under fire for practices like understaffing stores to keep costs down and hiring tons of temporary workers as a means to avoid paying full-time workers benefits, WinCo has a reputation for doing right by employees.
I'm a temporary worker clearing out this old wal mart in my town because of a super wal mart's opening, knowing this makes me feel weird...
There are laws in the US that say you can't undercut prices too much, or sell things too cheap (Which is stupid).
Incorrect. If you ran a car dealership and wanted to throw a few million into the ether, you could buy a bunch of Ferraris direct from Maranello then turn around and sell them for $15 a piece. It would be perfectly legal to do so as long as you had the necessary licenses to operate a car dealership. You'd lose an astronomical amount of money doing that, but it'd be perfectly legal. You can sell your goods for whatever price you want to, and it's up to the buyer to decide whether or not that price is fair enough that they'll pay it.
one of the few good things about living in Florida
We have those in TN too, but you'll pay about 25-40% more on the same items up here.
I got permanently banned from every Wal-Mart store and charged with felony grand larceny a few months back. I can't say it wouldn't please me to watch this store get toppled by another.
Translation: I stole some shit, they found out, the cops busted me, so I hate WalMart! You did something illegal and got busted. You're just pissed at them because they caught you being an asshat. You brought it on yourself and you rightfully deserve the ban and jailtime. Never before was a username so fitting...
Their customer service is terrifying
No worse than any other big chain.
the lost prevention team is full of white trash
You're just butthurt that you got caught stealing.
employees are underpaid
Stocking store shelves and checking customers out has never been a good way to make money.
quality of food is disturbing
How the hell is a box of Kraft Mac 'n Cheese bought at walmart in any way lower quality than a box of Kraft Mac 'n Cheese bought at Publix, Target or WinCo?
and prices are honestly no better than many other places.
Varies place to place. Here they are.
Do americans normally not bag their own groceries?
Nope. That's usually the cashier's job. Some stores have a teenager employed to do it as well.
asking customers to bag their own groceries
Honestly surprised here... I thought bagging your own groceries was the standard.
I work at Walmart as Night crew(Not a 24/7 store too) and get $12.10 (starting) where I am in Canada. It's not the best job, but it helps for school.
Do americans normally not bag their own groceries?
Where I am in Canada, some stores require the people to buy plastic bags, or bring their own and also bag their own food. Some stores also help with bagging and etc.
I geuss WinCo wins this one over wal mart
... Is it bad that I just applied for Wal-Mart (they were hiring in my area)?
whatever buys the video games.
Been working at Walmart over a year and making a meager 8.40 working in a money center, problem is I don't know of anywhere else that would pay better when I don't have much of a skillset.
Honestly surprised here... I thought bagging your own groceries was the standard.
In Australia you only bag your groceries if you go to Aldi, or if you go through the self-serve stations at Coles or Woolworths. And that's not going to change because if either Coles or Woolworths change to make customers bag their own groceries then everyone will flock over to the alternative (Coles and Woolworths share a duopoly). [editline]18th August 2013[/editline] On Coles and Woolworths, they are actually pretty fair despite people thinking they are evil because each has a huge market share. I was offered a part time contract at Coles on my third week there, and that contract includes things like sick and holiday leave. I love my work there, it has good pay and I get good hours. I'm easily able to afford the place I'm renting and all of my other expenses.
We got Woodman's in Wisconsin. The cheese aisle goes on forever.
I went to WinCo all the time in Bakersfield. The place really is fucking great, but I wouldn't compare it to Walmart. It's more like CostCo. Unfortunately there's no WinCo in my area, so I'm stuck with shitty Food4Less.
Honestly surprised here... I thought bagging your own groceries was the standard.
Standard in Canada and the US for either the cashier or a bag boy to bag everything for you and put it in the cart.
As somebody who has worked for Wal-Mart, I can honestly say that some of the bigger criticisms are actually legit. When Wal-Mart goes into a small town, there are some jobs that are lost, and a lot that are simply transferred to Wal-Mart and often the wages decrease. However, most of the criticisms that center around the simple nature of the corporate world are frankly pointless. Yeah, Wal-Mart shows you a video that's anti-union, yes, they prefer to keep you part-time. Those sort of things are nothing new, and I think the reason why Wal-Mart gets flak for them is because it's a "grocery store" or a "retail store." Go work in an office building, especially one that has a lot of unskilled labor positions. They will do everything they can to keep you part-time, and union organizing is discouraged. The simple fact is that sooner or later Wal-Mart's business practices, despite being pretty straightforward, were going to spawn some type of competitor. Well, here we are, and if people really gave a shit about Wal-Mart employees, small businesses, and where the products they purchase come from, they'll take their business to that competitor. In reality, most people don't give a shit and just like to bitch about interesting and popular things, and they'll just keep on doing what they've been doing. In the end I think all the retail chains will do just fine, because Wal-Mart will keep their more apathetic customers, and WinCo will get the activist types who despise Wal-Mart.
Standard in Canada and the US for either the cashier or a bag boy to bag everything for you and put it in the cart.
Wasn't standard at the Extra Foods we had but the local Co-op bags stuff for you (unless you use the self checkout obviously) You know you're western canadian when you say "the co-op"
I love WinCo. I have one about a town away, and it's really good. It's like, between Wal-mart and Costco. Plus, Wal-Mart gives me mad brain fog (maybe it's the lighting and retarded color scheme) WinCo and Costco do not.
I know what you mean, Wal-Mart just has a weird atmosphere.
It's funny how people in this thread think unions in this day and age are acceptable. WinCo would fail if it was unionized. There's no point to unions in this day and age. You don't like the benifits? Get a new fucking job.
Fuck wal-mart. Pay me $7.50 to unload a goddamn semi-truck in a hot ass store for 8 hours, kiss my dick.
Unloading trucks is easy as shit, I don't know why you expect to be paid more for it.
No one has mentioned Aldi? They not only have you bag your own stuff but also charge you for the bag... They even have carts that require a 25cent refundable deposit to use.
The bags are decent bags though. They're big and quite thick plastic bags compared to the small and thin that's the norm. [editline]17th August 2013[/editline] And they're like a quarter for the bags and you can just leave them in your car afterwards.
