I never really liked it as a rule that could dismiss you on the grounds of having different sexuality. I do however like "Don't ask, Don't tell" as a principle, as it enforces the rule of "Mind your own goddamn business". I don't see why people need to tell everyone that they're homosexual in the same way that I don't want people to go around announcing that they're straight. Perhaps they could just change the rule to "Ask if you want, Don't tell unless asked".
I think the assumption is you're straight unless otherwise stated.
Why not, just don't fire the people who turn up gay afterwards though.
So DADT stays but it can't be used? Heh America seems to cling to the symbols of hate more than the hate itself, which I guess is kind of progress
Why is that so hilariously backwards?
DADT is a-okay with me, if I'm in the field taking care of one of my wounded marines I don't want to have to worry about gays coming onto me on top of terrorists, suicide bombs, and IED's. I mean, I know I'm irresistable after all. So I wouldn't blame them.
I liked DADT because it gave me a chance to avoid the draft in a future war. Now I'm SOL because they can't enforce it :( If you think I'm being serious please shoot yourself.

You can be severely punished by the UCMJ for lieing about being gay to get out of service.
I think the assumption is you're straight unless otherwise stated.
Well what's so bad about that? I get the "no discrimination" part of the dislike towards that rule and I don't support discharges just because of your sexuality, but I don't understand why it's so very important for people to announce that they're not straight. Why can't they just keep their sexuality private like normal people?
I don't get why people are so negative about being drafted. Just try to volunteer for artillery or something. That's about as far from the lines that you can get without being an officer. [editline]18th July 2011[/editline] Or a civilian :v:
Well you're a prime target there (If they can get to you, that is.)
I dunno. Being in the military would be kind of nice. It would be like having bitchy parents and having to kill people sometimes.

As long as you crush the enemies will or capability to fight its good.
DADT was bad because it was essentially a ban on gays in the military If anyone found out you were gay, you were discharged
Ironically DADT was intended as the exact opposite. It was a compromise brought about by Clinton in order to bypass the ban on gays in the military. The idea being that if they just didn't bring it up, then nobody would ever ask or investigate. At some point along the way, it became some bizarre witch hunt and defeated the entire purpose. The policy is heavily flawed, Clinton knew that going in, but he also knew that it was all ground he was going to gain at the time. DADT, as predicted, has now opened the door at a later date to repeal the ban entirely. Clinton has been out of office for a decade and he is still fixing shit. Fuck the rules, can't we vote him back in?
