I can see something like the United States Library of Congress or the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization using technology like this, but I can't imagine it being affordable for the layman anytime soon.

This would be great for archival purposes and nearline storage.
As a photographer I would love this to store my photos on it without having to make dozen backups for the case the hard drive decides to die.
Welp, will probably be a long time before it becomes affordable for ordinary consumers.

Plus this is probably going to have very specific applications first for a while, such as archiving.
