That is the GAYEST argument I hear for the Civil War ever.
It was NOT about slavery. It was about STATE RIGHTS.

Hardly. Slavery didn't even come into the picture until a ways into the war.
Well then fuck the constitution, it's wrong
Bullshit
there are alternatives to subdue a robber without a gun
You wake up. You grab a bat. You go down the hall and see a robber. He pulls his gun out at you.
Bye.
Besides, don't be so selfish. I would rather hold a thief at gunpoint than to let him escape and commit more crimes, and possibly even kill someone. Just because you weren't killed doesn't mean that he won't be so kind to others.
Hardly. Slavery didn't even come into the picture until a ways into the war.
When you speak to him, you have to keep in mind that in elementary, they teach children that the civil war was pretty much all about slavery.
So you think the 2nd Amendment covers all forms of firearms technology, and that was the intent of the founders, despite the technology of their day taking a minute to load and having an accuracy of 50 yards?
That's like asking if the 1st amendment is still valid because communication technology has expanded past word of mouth and newspapers.
The answer is yes, by the way.

I do.

I'm in college in Texas and i'm still taught that.

That's... not really a valid comparison. The right to free speech is a pretty clear issue, you can say the same things now you could back then. You couldn't have a gun that fired 200 rounds a minute or something back then. I doubt their intent would have been to cover all firearms, seeing as how the technology today is incomparably more deadly than it was back then.

One of the saddest things about the American educational system...

You do understand that it doesn't take a whole lot to kill a man, right? I doubt you have a 50+ yard hallway.
there are alternatives to subdue a robber without a gun
Riskier ones, yes. I'm sorry, but when it comes down to dealing with an intruder, all bets are off. Concerns about his safety no longer enter the equation: my personal safety, and the safety of those I care about will be my highest priority.
I would use proper escalation of force, of course. You act like anybody with a weapon will open fire the moment they see an intruder. Shout, show, shove, shoot. Meaning you alert him to your presence and you make it known that you're armed. If he gets physical, you shove him, buttstroke him, knock him down, do whatever you can to take control of the situation. If he runs, you let him go (the immediate danger has passed). If he submits, you hold him for the authorities. If he escalates his show of force, you do the same. That's when you shoot.
Guns are a right. I use them for hunting, skeet shooting, personal value, and protection. If someone is breaking into my house, the first thing I'm going to do is get a gun and let him know I have one. No robber is going to break in knowing the owner has a gun in his hand.
It's not considered news worthy. The only times it shows up in the news are when a person shoots someone robbing their neighbor's house.
Self defense occurs pretty often.
My insurance is lower because I own firearms.
Chew on that for a minute.
Your insurance company is idiotic.

actually the willpower to pull a trigger and kill someone is not as easy as you might think

State's Rights to own slaves :v:
To own slaves, yes, but it covered a much wider scope than that.
To say it's about slavery is to say that WWII was strictly to stop the Holocaust.
American children are more at risk from firearms than the children of any other industrialized nation. In one year, firearms killed no children in Japan, 19 in Great Britain, 57 in Germany, 109 in France, 153 in Canada, and 5,285 in the United States
Want to know something about all those countries?
Japan allows no handguns, and you have to apply to buy a shotgun
Great Britain banned firearms.
Germany has severe limitations on their weapons
France allows only a certain caliber, and no automatic weapons.
In Canada you have to get a license to buy a gun and be aligned with a hunting organization.
In the US, we have very low restrictions on what you can and can't buy.

They are much smaller nations too.
And, just because some adults don't know how to parent right and keep things away from their children reach is NOT an excuse to hinder a right of man.
To own slaves, yes, but it covered a much wider scope than that.

And another invalid comparison. The abolitionist movement had a long history in the northern states and most everybody in the country knew the horrors of slavery. Many northern senators and other governmental types in favor of the war thought Slavery was a serious issue. As for the Holocaust, we knew Jews were being oppressed and treated badly, but we had no idea of the scope of the problem. If we had known, chances are the war would have been much more focused on it.

You think it's just a coincidence that 5 thousand children die from accidents? this is gun crime, not accidents.
actually the willpower to pull a trigger and kill someone is not as easy as you might think
This is not about willpower. I'm saying that you could still kill, or at least fatally wound someone with a gun from more than a century ago.
I'm fine with using guns for hunting, ranges, clay pigeons etc... Its just when it gets to the paranoia of everyone shooting anyone doing anything in 'self defence' that just gets a bit stupid.
Your insurance company is idiotic.
Not really. Insurance is all a numbers game. The numbers show that armed individuals are less likely to suffer property loss or medical bills from intruders. It makes armed customers of lower risk.
Just numbers, kiddo.
i honestly don't believe 5,000 + kids die from guns every year
