But was this the intent of them or was it to just damage crops or more short term damage etc? I just cant imagine intentionally screwing anywhere over this hard for this long for any reason war or not.
It was used a defoliant to decrease the density of the forests, to increase the ease of finding VC and making movement for our troops easier.
My grandfather flew the C-123's that sprayed Agent Orange back to the US after Vietnam; and he died of a lung cancer.
A slow, painful, death. Watching his body decay, and his mind as the cancer spread to his brain. The treatment was just as painful, and when he started seizing, he was permanently brain damaged. He never recovered, and was never the same. it was heartbreaking to see the man I respected the most out of all my family reduced to a dithering and ranting wreck, crying for his mother.
And guess what? We didn't get any compensation. If we hadn't dropped AO, we would be better off in more ways than one. Besides creating an environmental disaster, we wouldn't have messed up a lot of vietnamese, nor a lot of our soldiers (we're still finding out how far Agent Orange reached)
As I recall, we minted around 500,000 or so Purple Hearts (for those of you who don't know, that's the medal they give you if you get wounded) in preparation for the invasion of Japan.
We still haven't issued all of them yet. In 70+ years of on and off warfare, we haven't yet reached the number of casualties that were projected for the invasion of Japan.
This is something important to understand. What we did wasn't good, but we stopped a lot of our own casualties and just as many, if not more, civilian casualties from occurring. It was the least monstrous of the monstrous choices
it's kind of horrifying how there's a blatant disregard for the human rights of others, in that respect, simply because they're 'the enemy'.
don't fuck with us
It's also quite fascinating to see that even years later the shit is still having some effect. Like, wow.
