Dear God, yes... Win10 a free upgrade for Win8 AND Win7 users.

Its probably worth upgrading because of DX11.1 Integration, Cortana, Flat UI (Subjective, I think it looks nice and I prefer it over aero), it uses less resources and is way faster then W7, and its FREE. The only reason I wouldn't get it is because I'm assuming older games won't work (like with Win8).
In a case like this, what would happen if you needed to format and reinstalls after upgrading? If you got a Win 7 OS disk then how would you grab Win 10 again if it's past the free upgrade time period has gone? Never have done that kind of upgrade so I'm not sure how it works.
Shame I can't get this. Probably would've been neat.
I'll grab a key from the program, but unless W10 has a classic skin that makes it look like 98SE I won't use it until games simply don't run on Seven anymore. I don't want, need, care for or desire the flashy metro bullshit Microsoft's been trying to push us towards since XP. I've always used the classic skin and will continue to do so. Fancy doesn't appeal, function first form maybe in a year.
You are dumb for overlooking all the benefits added in Windows 8. It is a much superior operating system to Windows 7, and Windows 10 will just build upon that.
[editline]21st January 2015[/editline]
People who stick with Windows 7 after 10 is out and stable(ish) are just as bad as the people who stuck with XP till recently..
It's very likely since they introduced a MASSIVE sized Surface product called "Surface Hub" (think SmartBoard size/functionality) running Win 10, aka they'll have to make DPI scaling work well to make that product work well
DPI scaling is more important on their current surface devices IMO. Getting high resolutions to work on small screens needs some real work.
I've never got why, since our windows are now solid colours, Microsoft doesn't just let us choose a gradient for it (using a similar interface to the one in Office). Just imagine, we could all have rainbow taskbars.
[editline]21st January 2015[/editline]
I still think that, at the very least, it would be nice to have a mild gradient, like the ones used in iOS. I'm not always the biggest fan of Apple stuff, but plain, simple colours, whilst inoffensive, do get a bit bland.

You can put in recommendations to Microsoft in the technical preview (Or get someone that has access to the suggestions area to) and they might add it. I don't see why they couldn't.
[editline]asjdhkas[/editline]
I put in the suggestion, vote it if you want. I dunno how effective this will be, but why not give it a shot?
There has to be some catch to this. I find it hard to believe they're literally going to give away Windows 10.

Probably a PR stunt after the relative flop of Windows 8. Sure, it sold, but I'm pretty certain most copies only sold because people had to buy it for any number of reasons. With Windows 10 it's pretty clear that they're trying to repent- not that I'm not happy about that. I think the money Microsoft will make from new customers/ PCs is enough to make up for anything they lose if this one takes off. Plus, it would stick to the classic 'Good-bad-good-bad' that's seemed to be the case for the last few iterations of Windows.
Free, free, anything free is good enough for me!

Sometimes I wonder if they do the good-bad-good-bad thing on purpose.
To the people not wanting the upgrade from 7, I have windows 8.1 and absolutely love it. I thought that it would be a trash OS because of the styling, but I can tell you honestly that I don't miss the original start menu at all. In fact, I forget it existed until someone brings it up

not to mention 8.1 will have an original-styled start menu nice
Sometimes I wonder if they do the good-bad-good-bad thing on purpose.
Its always the result of a significant overhaul in some way. Vista was a HUGE change from XP, trying to move away from the old standards set in Windows NT. Poor drivers, bugs and underspecced machines bungled Vista's release. After Vista SP2, its literally Windows 7, bar a couple features.
Windows 8 was the massive UI overhaul with mixed results and questionable methods of transition. The OS itself is rock solid, but some people couldn't handle the change.
Windows 10 will be to 8 what 7 was to Vista. Largely the same OS but with some changes.

classic theme looks fucking god awful, I don't know what is with people and their obsession with a poorly made 1995 skin that was only implemented because computers couldn't handle anything but that
Sounds sketchy I'll wait and see
I hope everything I have installed will work with W10. I'm not really educated in how getting a new OS works since every jump I've had was from needing to get a new laptop (XP laptop was stolen, W7 laptop had its innards fucked) and I'll be happy to get off this shitheap W8.1 that's been constantly unresponsive since day 1.
If 8.1 is unresponsive now, your Windows install is either fucked, or that laptop is taking a shit on you.
yeah change is terrible
Nobody said anything about change being bad.

still consistently use the start menu because i have full screen applications to move between and decide which one to run when. almost never use the desktop.
in any case, how does preinstalled packages work with the licensing bs i'm hearing? such as getting a computer from a shop instead of building from scratch

If you're making a statement like that then you don't really believe in the "form follows function" principle, you're just being a pompous asshole.
If you really followed that you wouldn't give a shit what it looks like.

Probably no different than it is now. They haven't even announced a difference in licensing, so I assume the licensing thing was just something they were throwing around or speculation. Its a rumor and nothing more.
Monthly subscription on a $100 piece of software is sort of ridiculous anyway.
Has there been any news on whether W10 will come to the tablets? I have a Surface Pro 2 for school, and I would love this upgrade. I haven't seen anything on it, however, so I'm a little scared that it'll be stuck in the past.

Your shouldn't worry at all about the Surface Pro series. They're running the same version of Windows you could install on a laptop or a desktop.

actually no they won't considering it runs at 4k, which means it would have a very normal PPI anyways.

Alright, thanks. I was confused when hearing about a "Windows RT", but looking it up it's confirmed for them as well. Makes sense, considering it runs on the damn Xbox as well.
Overall, I think I'll take a free upgrade for at least that. Once I'm used to it and think it's a worthy upgrade, I'll transfer my PC as well.
So...does it still look like it was designed for a 7-inch tablet and not a proper pair of desktop monitors? Did they finally give up on trying to force users out of the desktop and into a screen full of ad-serving tiles?

And before anyone says anything, none of those are built in ads.
Flipboard (the app under mail in the example screenshot) is similar to an RSS reader, TripAdvisor and mint.com do not come with the OS and were installed by the user who took that shot. Bottom right is the built in news app (which you can disable). I'm not sure what the car and Despicable Me character are but I think they're games, and they're definitely user-installed here.

Performance benefits up the ass, hibernate no longer sucks, shut down now performs a "hybrid boot" which is basically hibernating but only restores the core system on boot up (accelerates the fuck out of boot times, can be disabled if for instance you dual boot Windows and Linux), if you log in with a Microsoft account it syncs shit like your account picture and desktop wallpaper (and your installed Metro apps if you installed any of those), Windows can automatically adjust your color to match your background (with 75% "looks good" rate in my experience) some people think the change from the Aero style to the flatter Metro style is a major benefit
Hmm, I got windows 8 pro for free too, yay
