Can you get a theme for it to make the windows have rounded corners and not be flat colours?
DX11.1+ support, corner window snapping (4 windows per screen is amazing to me instead of 2 screens snapped to the sides in 7), and the OS feels more responsive compared to 7 (Most likely optimizations in file system / OS task management).
Is this seriously a feature that will make you use Win10 over Win7?
If 10 seems worthwhile I'm just going to duplicate my drive beforehand so I can switch back to 7 if I don't like 10. Best of both worlds.
My guess is your license will be carried over to 10, meaning you wouldn't be able to go back. [editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
Is this seriously a feature that will make you use Win10 over Win7?
When it's free, why not?
I just bought 7 for the PC I'm building - I'm hoping they'll just require a key and not an installed copy because I really don't want to install 7 only to upgrade immediately to 10. Either way this is pretty great. I'll hold out for more info before I get too excited though.
I'm actually kind of upset that MetroUI is being abandoned. I really like it now that I have it set up in a way that I want. The start menu was created back when the start menu would take up your entire screen and now with higher resolution displays, I feel that it should go back to being full screen rather than focusing your eyes on 1/6th of your entire display. It's not like you can multitask while the start menu is open anyways. My only issue with Metro is that it seems like two separate experiences rather than improving on what people know and love. Also Microsoft had the perfect opportunity to make the app store the replacement for SourceForge and all that nonsense. Want WinRAR? You don't need to go on rarlabs anymore, want Steam? Here you go. It's a shame they botched that one up.
Oh this is awesome. I was already going to upgrade to Win10 when it came out. Now there's practically no excuse to not finally move on from 7. Especially since they stopped mainstream support for it.

Some applications are now only available through the Mac App Store, and that's just plain annoying - I want to be able to download them from the web as well.
I want to be able to download them from the web as well.
This isn't impossible in the future, since cloud, but currently they do have an app store that is navigable on the internet, and if you are running a windows 8 system, it would automatically open the application in the modern application
Is this seriously a feature that will make you use Win10 over Win7?
It's one of those "you won't think you need it but end up not being able to live without features." The original side-by-side snapping introduced in Win7 is a major convenience feature and using my mom's computer still running XP just feels clunky nowadays.
There has to be some catch to this. I find it hard to believe they're literally going to give away Windows 10.
The catch is that windows 8 has a tiny market share.
The "catch" is that they'll probably be planning to recoup the costs off of Windows App Store profits, similar to how Valve makes most their money off of their cut of Steam game purchases rather than their own games. Even Office is going to be integrated into Win10 for free now rather than being a separate product you have to buy. Give their own platform and products away for free for mass market adoption, then make their killing off of the app store and enterprise licenses. Honestly, it's a better deal for everyone involved: Microsoft and us. Steam proved it's perfectly viable even from a business standpoint to have a free service if the service has an integrated storefront.

Most licenses are sold to PC makers like Dell, HP, ASUS, etc., so this probably won't eat into their profits as much as you'd think. Fairly few people actually by licenses directly from Microsoft.
Do you guys think there's any reason to switch from 8.1 to 10? Besides some minor changes? I mean, yeah, it's new and free so why not but why bothering if it's not gonna be a blast.

Windows 8 isn't going to get better DPI scaling, but Windows 10 might at some point. Also, the support window is larger.
[t]http://az648995.vo.msecnd.net/win/2014/09/Tech-Preview_Start-menu.png[/t] The tiles are in the start menu now.
you can also remove all the tiles from the menu and just have the program list iirc
I hope they accept my W7 key. When I reinstalled W7 due to a virus, it wouldn't accept my key.
It doesn't accept mine either, so I just decided, hey, fuck it, time to delete system files so it stops pestering me about "not being genuine." I have the fucking box my OEM disc came in with disc right here Microsoft, I know for a fact this key is valid.
How generous of them... But the real question is, is it any good this time around?
[t]http://az648995.vo.msecnd.net/win/2014/09/Tech-Preview_Start-menu.png[/t] The tiles are in the start menu now.
Steam tile looks great too [t]https://i.imgur.com/AWCW4kD.jpg[/t]
Performance benefits up the ass, hibernate no longer sucks, shut down now performs a "hybrid boot" which is basically hibernating but only restores the core system on boot up (accelerates the fuck out of boot times, can be disabled if for instance you dual boot Windows and Linux), if you log in with a Microsoft account it syncs shit like your account picture and desktop wallpaper (and your installed Metro apps if you installed any of those), Windows can automatically adjust your color to match your background (with 75% "looks good" rate in my experience) some people think the change from the Aero style to the flatter Metro style is a major benefit
That does seem pretty neat no idea what is a metro app though
So, what do you guys think? new god-like OS (like XP) or just W7 2.0?
Steam tile looks great too [t]https://i.imgur.com/AWCW4kD.jpg[/t]
I personally prefer OblyTile. The URL is straight to the game, and is a bit more customizable. [editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
How generous of them... But the real question is, is it any good this time around?
"This time around?" This isn't pre-SP2 Vista, what're you talking about? [editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
So, what do you guys think? new god-like OS (like XP) or just W7 2.0?
XP was only god-like because of the jump it made from the last OS, and it's longevity due to Vista having a very rusty start. Once W7 got situated, it was obsolete. Windows 8 is already a W7 2.0, and W10 is W8 2.0. [editline]22nd January 2015[/editline]
That does seem pretty neat no idea what is a metro app though
Basically Windows 8's tablet apps
I'll grab a key from the program, but unless W10 has a classic skin that makes it look like 98SE I won't use it until games simply don't run on Seven anymore. I don't want, need, care for or desire the flashy metro bullshit Microsoft's been trying to push us towards since XP. I've always used the classic skin and will continue to do so. Fancy doesn't appeal, function first form maybe in a year.
You can't get simpler than a solid color.
So, what do you guys think? new god-like OS (like XP) or just W7 2.0?
It was fourteen years ago. Get over it.
Is this seriously a feature that will make you use Win10 over Win7?
As someone who likes using multiple windows at once for file sorting, organizing (Especially Skyrim mods, oh god there's so much stuff), having Skype open while listening to music and browsing the web... YES
I bought WinDivvy because Windows 8's Aero Snap is terrible. http://mizage.com/windivvy/ They should release something as customizeable.
I read the title as "Win 10 free upgrades for Win8 and Win7 Users" and I was like "WHERE DO I SIGN UP" But a free upgrade for any win8/win7 user in the first year is just as good.
Ehhh.. EHHHH.. I dunno! Its a big step, but it IS free. I love free. And it sucks considering I sunk $100 into my new Windows 7 here because I lost the CD/key forever ago. I DON'T KNOW. I might give it a month or so before getting it, so they have time to work out the kinks.
Sometimes I wonder if they do the good-bad-good-bad thing on purpose.
I think the good-bad-good-bad thing is on hold, windows 7 was amazing, windows 8 just as good, windows 8.1 fixed almost every problem I had with 8 (metro UI is still useless to me), and from the sounds of things windows 10 is even better
Genius way to get everyone on-board with giving up their old OS. Electric car companies should take note. I'll definitely be upgrading asap, once it comes out.
Can I get a refund though if I don't like it?
