To me it felt... incomplete...
Like I've never watched a godzilla film so I dunno if I was expecting him to destroy America, but like what [s] happened to the nuke on the boat? [/s]

[sp]You very clearly see it blow up off the coast.[/sp]
Eh, the movie was pretty bland and forgettable IMO. I can only hope the sequel is less so
the fight scenes were great and very visually pleasing, though the [sp]part where Godzilla blows the flame in the mouth was very dumb. I feel a neck snap/jaw break/rip would have ended that scene much better.[/sp]
also they used the whole [sp]didn't see the gigantic trench left behind mistake.[/sp]
wouldn't Godzilla 20 be closer to the real number by now, though
the fight scenes were great and very visually pleasing, though the [sp]part where Godzilla blows the flame in the mouth was very dumb. I feel a neck snap/jaw break/rip would have ended that scene much better.[/sp]
[sp]Clearly you have not seen Godzilla: 2000. Or Godzilla vs Biollante, even. It's the way he finishes off true bigbads. It's his signature move.[/sp]
The issue with the movie is that it focused far too much on the human side, and worse yet the majority of the human side carried no weight. Seriously, Aaron Taylor-Johnson had zero presence, half the time he blends in to the scenery. And the others like Watanabe were good in their roles but were underutilized. At least 65% of Ken Watanabe's lines were "Let them fight. Rules of nature."
If the human side were better used, having such a focus on them wouldn't have been an issue, but because it was poor, it drags down the movie over all.
All the scenes directly involving the monsters were great, the movie was absolutely gorgeous, and overall it was enjoyable. Just the weak human aspect is what lets it down.
Though her character was an archetype and didn't have much depth, I thought Olsen played the emotional side fairly well. Though this may speak to the otherwise unmemorable (non-Cranston) acting the rest of the film had, the phone call in the hospital was done nicely.
That said, I was most disappointed by Ken Watanabe and Sally Hawkins, not so much because of their acting but because their characters just held so little weight. Definition of underutilized right there.
As I said in the Godzilla thread in the film section, Ken Watanabe [sp]is the only person who would make sense coming back, as he's basically Godzilla's main scientist[/sp]
Though, another user pointed out that him not being used much made sense as [sp]he's a scientist. What do you want him to do, go down right up to the monsters and whack them with a stick? Focusing on Cranston's son, a soldier, gives a good reason to be right up and personal with the MUTOS and King of the Monsters[/sp]

Though this may be true, I've just never liked it. meh.

29.
30 if you count the Roland Emmerich "Giant Purple Iguana"

It was more akin to the very first, original Godzilla movie, which was about the people, than Godzilla himself.

[sp]Atomic Breath[/sp] is Godzilla's signature move, you cannot have a Zilla movie without it. (1998 movie doesn't count)

[sp]His name is Serizawa though, which is the surname of the protagonist in the original 'Gojira', who eventually kills Godzilla with the Oxygen Destroyer. I feel that the name was used inappropriately.[/sp]

Perhaps foreshadowing for later sequels?

And if they could give a bit more juice to Aaron Taylor-Johnson's neck bolts, he could be alright too. But they'd be better off finding someone more lively to take his place.

Disagree
You know, there's one thing that bothered me with this film, along with Pacific Rim, War of the Worlds 2005 and a few others I probably forget. [sp]Specifically when Godzilla is swimming infront of the bridge, he's completely underwater, then when he gets up the water is like barely knee deep. How does that work???[/sp]

[sp]Because he's basically laying down, close to the sea bed?
Just because you're in a foot of water doesn't mean you're incapable of submerging yourself[/sp] :v:
At least in Godzilla. The other movies, I dunno.
Perhaps foreshadowing for later sequels?
True [sp]Edwards did use a lot of foreshadowing, and I felt that the focus on Godzilla's submergence at the end was far too long to just be a coincidence[/sp]

[sp]As others have said, the Atomic Breath is Godzilla's signature move, but more to the point, a jaw break or the like would be stealing a page or two from King Kong, which would be disappointing.[/sp]
The biggest problem I had with the movie is when [sp]the boat with the bomb on it is completely abandoned, and despite the bomb only have 5 minutes left we never see the effects of the explosion. To put the bomb far enough away to save San Francisco the boat would've needed to move at ridiculous speeds. at 220 mph the boat is only 20 miles away by the time the bomb goes off. It's not the physics behind the issue that bothers me though, it's the fact that the writers could've done something else with the bomb and not had this issue.[/sp]

[sp] The Bomb did nothing to the city because the range it was at had no effect on the city, It had to be 20 miles out in order to get away from the city, which it was.[/sp]

What I hated most in this movie was exactly what I hated most in Man of Steel; People are shown as being these quiet, inquisitive things. As their city is being smashed to hell, they simply stare on without fear. There was that one scene in Godzilla where he walks right past a bunch of people and they don't even blink, but then the gunshots make them all freak out.
Anyway, I'm already 99% sure the next movie is going to be about[sp] Mothra [/sp]because[sp]when Cranston and his son are in their old home, there's a terrarium containing a bloated chrysalis that says MOTHRA on the side.[/sp] Not exactly subtle foreshadowing. Hopefully they don't go the way of superhero movies and put a bunch of enemies in one sequel.

[sp]Everyone expected him to just rip the jaw off, like King Kong did to the T-rex. What we got was so much better.[/sp]

It's not every day you see a giant monster of that magnitude walk by. It's almost unreal. Am I truly imagining this? I must be insane, is that really a giant behemoth of death?
Then the gunshots snap you out of it, you realize you are nothing but a bug in its way and should probably flee.
You may call them stupid, I call it being theatrically realistic.

[sp] He was far enough away for the shockwave to be minimal, Godzilla absorbed the radiation, crisis averted [/sp]
Also how many times did the movie try to get away with people SOMEHOW not immediately noticing the kaiju?
[Sp]The part after they investigated Yucca mountain where the soldier had to use his binoculars to see the MUTO in the middle of the desert made me break into audible laughter.
Or the part on the tram in hawaii when the lights were turning on across the city and nobody noticed the giant fucking monster wrecking up the city (or the jets getting blown up for that matter) until the lights shined on it...[/sp]

Even when the little girl was walking up to the shore because she noticed something and wasn't sure what, she waited a couple minutes before getting anyone's attention. Children don't go, "Hmmm, what is this I'm seeing? How peculiar." They go, "MOMMY LOOK AT THAT! HEY MOM COME HERE LOOK MOM!!"
And in Man of Steel, those people had known for far long enough what was happening. They knew they'd be getting killed, but still they just watched instead of heading to a safer area.
Not all children are the same. Some panic like that, some are quietly inquisitive.
It's not about panicking, it's about wanting their parents' attention.

To go along with my previous post just two above, it's not as if people are looking for them.
"Oh, a [sp]power outage? Oh, now the lights are back on?[/sp] let me look for people or something along that line that are okay because nothing [sp]bigger could possibly be around.[/sp]"

[Sp]Man its a giant fucking monster walking through buildings and making jets rain down in exploding fire. You're going to notice SOMETHING'S UP regardless of whether or not the lights are on.
And that doesnt explain shit about why the soldier had to take out his binoculars to see a damn kaiju in a flat ass desert. Sure its nitpicky but I mean come the fuck on. Power outages don't make jets blow up and buildings collapse, but nobody on the tram seemed to give a fuck.[/sp]

I'm not trying to discredit the whole movie for this mind you. I didn't like it too much but not for those reasons. Those parts just stuck out to me as really stupid :v:
