Zelda Williams leaves Twitter after people abuse her

I saw the picture of the mexican guy and thought it was him at first, but someone pointed out the picture was from 2010. I figured at the time he wouldn't kill himself in such a brutal way, but holy shit i just learned he did. Cut wrists and a belt, it matches the picture perfectly. Why the fuck?
Well, she deleted her Twitter. Problem solved, is it not?

Well, a little bit. There is a connection between this and anonymous internet harassment, though, so that's a problem left unsolved. You can take that however way you want. I choose to see the problem as unsolved.

I agree with this assessment, leaving the scene doesn't solve anything, it just buries the problem until the next incident of this nature crops up.
so i understand that some people were very evil and said bad things to zelda, but what were the nature of the things said? i've seen some bad cyberbullying before but this seems to be the worst that a lot of people have seen

Remember that it can escalate depending on how much of a sensation you can become and how much personal information is available on the internet. For instance, Jessi Slaughter has been absolutely chaotic because of the internet invading her life, and even though she was being an ass she definitely didn't deserve the trouble she got from just about every nook and cranny of the internet.
The thing about "cyber bullying" is it has two stupidly ambiguous words in it that can encompass a lot in a blinding candy-coating. "Cyber" sounds about as cool as saying "The World Wide Web" or "Information Superhighway", and "bullying" doesn't necessarily have the serious connotation I think it deserves - especially with some of the god awful anti-bullying PSA's I've seen. There are people harassed to the point of stalking with endless amounts of verbal abuse (potentially centered around a vulnerability like death or rape), and there's also stuff that delves into security problems with breaking into accounts and stuff.
What I think people don't realize is that the internet is a huge source of information and is highly ingrained into our society, and it follows us everywhere. Whereas I was merely harassed on forums and IRC chatrooms, the growth of the social network has become the internet for lots of people. Facebook and Twitter are potential mediums for harassment, and by simply shutting that off you're cutting off a growing part of societal connections.

I have little sympathy for shit like that, why did she react when they were clearly just trying to provoke her? She's obviously not stable and needs to take a break from pretty much everything until she's done mourning her dad.
sorry, was referring to people who are in defense of zelda that a day or two ago were laughing about the harassment of twitch streamers
You mean that thing that's not really all that similar to this situation? Because it really isn't.

You say that now, but after going through an awful event like that people usually aren't thinking as clearly as they'd normally be.

you archive that thread?
Jesus Christ some of you people don't realize how its so much easier said than done to not get offended by people on the internet.
;45683638']Contact police, contact Twitter, get IPs, and if in US, sue for harassment and emotional damage. Seriously, if there's ever a reason for doxing, it's shit like this. Locate the people who do it and get em. No one deserves this shit.
Ooh! In one of the old AUATF threads, one of the mods (Starpluck I believe it was, not entirely sure) said that garry approved all raids as long as they weren't Habbo Hotel raids! This is the perfect opportunity. :v:
(though some posts indicate that 4channers are already attempting to dox)
i hate this world
This is really sad, how people can have that kind of mentality, they just go "Oh look this dude died, let's annoy his daughter with all kind of stuff"
It's disgusting

Annoy is too light a word, I would argue these people are trying to traumatize her.
What the actual fuck.
What a low, sick, twisted bastard can you be to abuse somebody like this after her dad died, who has done absolutely nothing wrong.

It's easy to get offended online but it's also easy to deal with it.
I used to see this on my Garry's Mod server a lot:
1. Shithead joins, starts spawnkilling people
2. Freeze shithead, trap him in corner of map, build box around him so he can't see (complete with laser light show aka SUPER LOUD EPILEPSY FUNTIME BOX)
3. Shithead whines and bitches for an hour (usually to the tune of "I PROMISE I WILL BE BETTER!" or "MY DUPES ARE ON THIS SERVER!")
4. Finally leaves
And yes, you read that right: an hour. Some guys lasted even longer. Why would they waste an hour of their lives on my server when they could have gone anywhere else and actually had fun? I don't really know. It's like people are so hellbent on being right or winning that they refuse to back down. If that really is why this happens, I think society is to blame: stop teaching kids "NO RETREAT NO SURRENDER" and start teaching them to choose their battles.

Especially right after it's happened and they're still going through the shock of losing them.
It's easy to deal with bullying online when you're a social recluse with no ability to feel empathy or basic human emotions
[editline]15th August 2014[/editline]
Also yeah clearly Zelda should have solved the problem by putting them in the seizure box and banning them from her Twitter server

because reverting to video games in a serious and deeply unpleasant real life situation is of course the clear mark of someone who is not an asocial, self-absorbed weirdo. not at all.

Yes, you read that right ladies and gentlemen, I modded a Garry's Mod server. I'm aware that there may be some people fainting in the audience, and for that apologize. But if you think your universally beloved dad topping himself is rough, you got another thing coming. I put kids in virtual cages for a living, and it haunts me now, and it will haunt me until my dying day.
They say the war is over now, but it all keeps on in my head. Don't try and tell me your pain is worse.
[editline]15th August[/editline]
These hands have banned. The virtual blood never comes off, no matter how hard you scrub.
Imo it would be great if one of the many hacking groups got their info out to the public

Not even fucking close to the same thing.

Well aware of this. I was wondering outloud if the mentality of having to win or hold your ground was the same one that causes people to be deeply offended on the internet. Could I have got to that point better? Sure, I'll give you guys that.
I feel sorry for Zelda but you just can't take the internet that seriously. You need to be able to walk away. Fact is, she has walked away and she didn't even make a big deal out of it - the rest of the internet did. Imo she handled it just fine. But no, I don't feel this should be spurring a discussion about "cyberbullying".

I think this is a really sad statement.
"Yeah, the internet is terrible. You just have to accept that."
When has this argument been acceptable in any case? And again, you're putting the word "cyberbullying" in quotes like it doesn't exist.
I'm going to be frank with you - I have no idea how to solve the problem of anonymous harassment on the internet. However, let's not pretend it's not a problem.
People should get a thicker skin in the sense that the world is always going to be full of jerks, but at what point can we shove all of the problems on the victim? And at what point are we going to say "Oh, just stay away from X?" In order for her to stay away from these problems, she's going to have to stay away from all means of social interaction and communication on the internet, and the more you blame the victim instead of recognizing that there's an actual problem here, the more you become a part of the problem yourself. And the more you try to hide away from this problem, the more you reveal about your unforgiving, apathetic personality. (Saying "I'm sorry" doesn't cut it, pal.)
