the implication of my last post is that they WOULDN'T have taken a kid away from a white family because that shit's fucked up. but gypsies are a minority and it's socially acceptable to hate on them so no one cared.

Has there ever actually been a case where a Gypsy has stolen a child from another family? That just sounds like something an insane person would do, them being a Gypsy having little to nothing to do with it.
hey dude showing up to a family's house and taking their child away from them because you got a phone call is definitely NOT police procedure. i'd love for you to show me where in the Irish Law Enforcement pamphlet they are allowed to do that.
During a two-hour visit to the house, officers interviewed the two adults about the girl and sought proof that she was their daughter.
They had concerns about the child's identity, and as a result of the interview and their attempts to check out the information given by the adults, they decided after two hours to use emergency powers contained in section 12 of the Child Care Act to take the girl from the family and hand her into the care of the HSE overnight.

Here is an Irish link, notice this part. (Its international law but every page labelled national abduction groups it with international and references to the act the below is quoted in)
a) To secure he prompt return of children wrongfully removed or retained in any contracting state; and (b) to ensure that rights of custody and access under the law of one Contracting state are effectively respected in other contracting states."
As far as the police knew (due to lack of documentation), the child was not of the family and as such her "family" was elsewhere, leaving her with the "kidnappers" would break the part about prompt return. Like I said before its a shit situation but its how to best combat these situations to tackle actual cases.
Edit: And what Glent referenced.
The Irish child’s parents, who are in their thirties, produced a birth certificate and passport for their child, but neither was accepted as conclusive proof of her identity and police could find no relevant records at the hospital where she was born.

On Monday, police went to one Roma family's home in southwest Dublin and sought the passport and birth certificate of the girl. The family produced them, but police opted to issue an emergency child protection order and place the child in state care. Police said the Romanian passport was not useful because it had a baby photo, not the girl's current appearance, while the birth certificate did not match Dublin hospital records.

Gardai were also told by the family, who have other children, that the girl was born at the Coombe Hospital in 2006, but preliminary checks could not confirm that.
However, an independent examination by the Irish Independent of the Coombe records yesterday showed that the woman had given birth to a daughter on the day she mentioned in 2006.
If this is true then it really shows the incompetence of the Gardai.
To be honest, if I were the police and I were in this situation, I would have probably done the same thing. While taking a kid away from her family is a really mean thing to do, what if she wasn't actually their kid? Let's say they left the kid with them and said, "okay, stay here, we'll just go confirm this and then we'll be out of your hair. Thanks for cooperating!" Then, having kidnapped this kid and not wanting to, you know, go to jail they just take off. So she's still kidnapped, her real family is still missing their child, and people who kidnap children are still wandering around. I'd much rather look like a complete heartless asshole for holding the kid until I knew for sure, than looking like an incompetent idiot who lets kidnappers and the kidnapped slip through my grasp.
Hopefully the family can walk away from this stronger than they were before. Maybe they'll also have stronger documentation in case this ever happens again. I also hope that whoever tipped the police did it because they were genuinely concerned, and not simply an asshole.
