pretty sure all those 14 were in one continuous sting in one episode, or in two stings in two episodes. not sure though.
As if it makes a difference?
Not to mention that outing people with treatable mental issues as criminal laughing stocks is a fairly immortal thing to do.
Because let's be honest, the last thing they'll provide these people is psychiatric help and treatment.
there are zero forms of therapy or psychiatric treatment that are successful, or even partially successful, in treating pedophilia. it's been tried before. either there's nothing we can do for it, or we haven't discovered it yet.

it does make a difference, though. if it all happened in one sting, then the problem was with that sting specifically and how they handled and executed that sting. by simply not doing what they did in that sting, they can avoid the issue of letting pedophiles back into the wild without any legal consequences. why is this complicated to understand? in those stings where everyone got charged properly, they did things right - so keep doing it that way. there's a reason drug stings are fairly standard with a cop buying drugs from a dealer: it works and it's simple. keep doing what works. come on.

i can see how the vigilante deal with the show is awful but you make it sound like this is pedo shaming when the show targets people who were actually gonna go through with their fantasies
it might be immoral but those people were going to do it regardless. they'd have been demonized either way, except in this case there's no victim

It does make a difference because it means they fucked up more than they should have been allowed to. They're meddling in something they shouldn't be for entertainment purposes, which is absolutely disgusting.
They did "catch" more than 23 people, but law enforcement only became involved during the third installment. Nobody that TCAP caught ever faced punishment by the law.
hm gee I wonder, maybe the show is garbage and just gets in the way of actual law enforcement and doing something about these people. but no, you'd rather have your feel good entertainment of a facade of something being done about those who are willing to commit sexual assault.

Not for treating pedophilia, but treatment to help pedophiles control their urges does exist.

This. Working in child care I've had to go through quite a bit of information and training on pedophilia and why they do what they do, and why they don't at times. It's an absolutely terrible issue to have, but there really are fantastic programs to help them control their urges.

Chemical castration exists and it's very effective. You can't fuck kids if you no longer have a sex drive to begin with. No sex drive, no attraction to children.

chemical castration is very, very far from being "therapy or psychiatric treatment"
chemical castration is very, very far from being "therapy or psychiatric treatment"
Why?
It's (generally considered) inhumane to force castration on someone, certainly.
But it is treatment. And some people voluntarily undergo it (or would if they could).

I specifically said "psychiatric help and treatment", as in "psychiatric help and proper medical treatment".
You're trying to put words in my mouth. Pedophilia can be treated (not cured, treated) with chemical castration. Making laughing stocks out of people who need help is wrong. This does not mean they're exempt from criminal charges. Hand-waving it away by saying "they would have done it anyway so we might as well catch them too" is idiotic because the issue is not about catching them (if someone's so far gone they're willing to commit that sort of crime should the opportunity appear they need to be found and stopped), it's about what you do with them.
To Catch a Predator was never about helping these people or offering them the treatment they need, it's about beguiling and laughing at people with issues which as far as I'm concerned is cruel. The show can't even pretend to be a "necessary evil" because the people who get caught are treated like any other criminal in the US which is to say like utter shit.

Chemical castration is a drug that you have to keep taking or the effects go away, there's no actual "castration" happening. It's just a sex drive suppressant.

I wasn't aware that chemical castration was just a sex drive suppressant, my bad. Still, I don't see how I'm putting words in your mouth.
Also, you misunderstood me, I never said "they would've done it either way", I'm saying they'd have been ostracized regardless, the only thing the show does is make an even bigger spectacle out of it. Yes, that's wrong, but yet again: saying that they're "laughing at people with issues" makes it seem like their targets are just people who'd have no problem with supressing their urges when in reality they were 100% willing to commit a crime. I also don't think it's the show you should be targeting with complaints about how child molesters are treated badly.
