Sony email leaks: Studio head wants Idris Elba as the next James Bond

I did a google on Sony's studio head Amy Pascal and shes a Jew.
/pol/ will have a field day.
I just think it's jarring having the character suddenly change race though, which is my only problem. It works for Doctor Who, because there's a process where the character can change into anyone.
Being white really isn't an integral thing to the character, the actor just needs to be capable of pretending to be suave/actually being sauve.
Isn't he supposed to be British?
As in, a Britty Brit :v:
yeah that kind of went out the door with all the american bonds.
I don't know that James Bond needs to be made suddenly black
"James Bond travels all around the world, sleeps with dozens of beautiful women, stops global domination plots, and has access to hundreds of secret high-tech gadgets and cars; But my suspension of disbelief ends when the actor is black."
This is exactly what you sound like. Does Exodus: G&K's mainly white cast bother you at all for a story taking place in the Middle East?

uhm why? its just another visual difference, if its not jarring for him to change facial features, changing races shouldnt be a problem
I dunno, Clive Owen worked really well in Shoot 'Em Up and that was all about dumb, over the top action with a nonsensical plot.
I can't really envision Owen being much different than Craig as Bond though. Maybe a bit more deadpan and snarky, but not much else.
A black Bond might be pretty interesting, so I'm for it. Usually they try to force diversity on characters that don't fit it at all just for the sake of being diverse, but a black Bond, I definitely want to see how that would pan out.

All of those things can be done by one person, but no matter how hard they try I've never seen a white man turn black.
It's not too hard to suspend disbelief that a bunch of white people that have the same hairstyle are playing the same dude, but it doesn't really work when you change his skin color.

its fine for m to turn from a man into a woman but a black bond just ruins it for you?
its fine for m to turn from a man into a woman but a black bond just ruins it for you?
No, I would rather that not happen either. Why assume that I'm fine with that?
In the end I don't really care that much because, meh, it's James Bond, but I still don't think it makes any sense.
Why doesn't it work? James Bond is a completely fictional character, which means he is subject to the director's artistic vision. If a rendition was based on something historical (like making Queen Victoria black) then you'd have a valid argument.
I prefer some semblance of continuity in my media. Would you have an issue with, for example, all the Harry Potter characters switching race in a movie? It's a fictional universe, right?

Hell no, Stringer Bell ain't no Agent Bond.
My only concern is I'm not sure he'll be able to pull of the flamboyant suaveness of the character. Craig couldn't do it either and I fear they are going to stick to this line of brooding loner Bonds in what are essentially Borne clones.
I don't really care if Bond is white or not I just want him to be charming and I don't think Idris Elba can really do that well.

why not?
I would go gay for that.
this absolutely will not work.
not because he's black. not because he's luther.
but because he's STRINGER MOTHERFUCKING BELL.
he will put MI6 out of commission so fast and nobody would even know.
you people seem to care a little too much about race to be honest
I'm wondering how many of you are being genuinely racist, and how many of you simply believe in a stories consistency
don cheadle maybe, but not stringer bell.
Man why can't they just pick Clive Owen already? He'd make such a fantastic Bond.
As a huge Bond fan I'll admit I balked at the idea of a black Bond. Mostly due to me not ever buying into the whole "Different agents with the same codename" theory. But I realized that I don't really care what they do, so long as they actually go back to what made Bond movies fun. The over the top action, the wild and crazy gadgets, the charismatic world dominating villains and the witty quips. I don't watch Bond to see Bourne identity like in the Craig movies, I watch it to see BOND!
the Craig era is already miles better than Brosnan.
the Craig era is already miles better than Brosnan.
well yeah when you consider that Brosnan only had one good bond film (GoldenEye) whereas each of Craig's has more or less been solid. even Quantum was decent once you figured out what was happening.

why not lol
its never explicitly stated that hes the same person. and if it is somehow implied, which makes even less sense, then look at this one as a reboot. it shouldnt be a big deal- hell, it just shouldnt matter.
all of the other actors look physically different from one another. elba's skin color is just another difference, except its a more noticeable one
idris is awesome, but i feel like he's too teddy bearish for the role. bond actors have always had a certain degree of sleaze that i just don't see in him.
Ok, we can have a black james bond if we can have a white Django.
That would be awesome to be honest. The only thing is that his character would be so similar to Luther's, it would just feel like Luther-but-as-a-secret-agent instead.
Ok, we can have a black james bond if we can have a white Django.
Except that Django being black is kind of intrinsic to the plot and setting of that film? It wouldn't work for him to be white and still have his goals and motivations stay the same and make sense.

I don't actually think I've seen anyone here being legitimately racist yet. Maybe a little bit prejudiced or biased, but not racist. Racist would be someone shouting slurs or being derogatory, the sort of "he can't be as good an actor because he's black" rhetoric, whereas people here seem more concerned with his ability to portray the character based on his previous characters. It's an important distinction, I think, unless we want to start sounding like CNN.

Every post you make seem more and more like tumblr
Every post you make seem more and more like tumblr
that doesn't even make any sense but OK or something
it's not THAT extreme of a post, like, come on. if I was more like tumblr I'd have just flat out called anyone who says it's not OK a racist.

that makes more sense :v:
I mean yeah saying racist was silly but I didn't know what else to say. It's a definite concern though, because SH seems to have a rising number of people that say ignorant shit about X people.
I do wonder though, outside of FP, how many people are masking race bias over this? Because, I'm not a huge bond fan but I doubt there is anything out there saying he has to be white

The books describe him as a white Britishman, but we're not basing the movies on the books anymore, so anything's possible.
