Damn it, you found us out!
I'm also on to your scheme with that bacon. Trying to sell me goddamn lunch meat and claiming it's bacon I'M TOO SMART FOR YOU, CANADA.
I'll just drop this here.
It's called drills. South Korea constantly tests their artillery and trains their troops.
but siding with them in a full-on war? fuck no. they have absolutely nothing to gain and absolutely everything to lose, for a country they're not even particularly fond of (I mean, who is, really)
I'm not exactly into politics, country relations, or foreign affairs but does China even get anything out of the relationship? It seems like NK is just a parasite.

:ohdear:
Am I the only one who is really unfazed by this? I live in a pretty important American city (San Antonio, lots of bases here) And I'm honestly not scared at all. I hope for the best and a war would be tragic, but I do not fear for myself. We have defenses setup and there's really no reason to fear over anything unless China gets involved (Which they likely won't but it is still a possibility). If anything right now I'm concerned for South Korea and the US troops going out there.
North Korea? Typical Americans, living under constant fear from a weak / non-existent enemy.
Their army isn't at all weak or non-existent on the defensive; but where you're talking about (power projection on a global theater), yeah, they might as well have nothing.
I don't believe so. It's most likely just humanitarian relief efforts just as the USA provides for Africa and other countries when they're in distress.
That's what I figured.
Their army isn't at all weak or non-existent on the defensive; but where you're talking about (power projection on a global theater), yeah, they might as well have nothing.
They're underfed, malnourished, poorly trained, under-equipped, use outdated equipment etc. They're a weak enemy. They make up most of their power in numbers. Defensively how well they can go, who knows.
I'll put that on the front page.

What basis do you have of them being poorly trained, though? As far as I know, they train just as much, if not more than most armies.
[img_thumb]http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50114000/gif/_50114613_military_balance_464.gif[/img_thumb] I'll put that on the front page.
NK may have numbers but it's dated tech and dated technology. A war is disastrous in any case but I don't picture this being too rough on SK/US.

(From what I've heard and know)
[img_thumb]http://news.bbcimg.co.uk/media/images/50114000/gif/_50114613_military_balance_464.gif[/img_thumb] I'll put that on the front page.
I want one for the USA
What basis do you have of them being poorly trained, though? As far as I know, they train just as much, if not more than most armies.
For instance:
The number of annual flying hours (AFH) per pilot is, like almost every other aspect of the KPAF, very hard to estimate. Most sources on the subject abstain from giving hard numbers, but all of them estimate the average annual flying hours per pilot as being 'low' to 'very low'.
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_People%27s_Air_Force
I thought North Korean pilots got as little as 25 hours of flight a year tops, and the troops on the ground get even less training in comparison because of the lack of supplies, Not only that, they're poorly fed
uAlso a few years ago NK became a nuclear power... so it is up to pair with the same amount of a threat as Cuba was to the united states as NK is a threat to SK with its nukes.
Not really. The North Korean nukes are shit, just because they have a few prototype, low yield missiles doesn't mean they suddenly have the same nuclear power the soviets did at the height of the cold war.
The wikipedia article says that the "AFH per pilot for the KPAF are said to be only 7, 15 or 25 hours per pilot each year" but I can't find a source for those numbers.
For instance: Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_People%27s_Air_Force
Yeah I'd imagine it's hard to get planes up and flying for training when you have absolutely no fuel. I was more thinking infantry. I was under the impression that their army is decently fed (obviously not well) because any available food goes to party members, the military, and then general population (in that order).

They have a serious fuel shortage in the country too so it makes sense that they would want to preserve or stockpile it Also S.K just started an emergency evacuation of the islands because of the artillery mentioned earlier http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/news/2010/11/28/0200000000AEN20101128002100320.HTML

This thread is kind of slow. We've already known about that Evacuation forty minutes ago. They already lifted it. Go to the other thread. We're currently up-to-date.
This brief says they lifted it: http://english.yonhapnews.co.kr/national/2010/11/28/99/0301000000AEN20101128002300315F.HTML
Perhaps the mandatory part they lifted but you know people are probably leaving on their own for their own good.
There are currently only 20 civilians on the island. Again, the other thread is up to date compared to this one.

It might be the another one of the shortest wars in history like the USA has had before.
