Wouldn't it be ironic if after it got there people discovered some sort of FTL drive?
There's a book series by Alastair Reynolds(Revelation Space) in which something just like that happens; five generation ships are launched at 61 Cygni with antimatter drives, and by the time they get to the planet they were aiming for, Earth had developed ships that accelerated up to a fraction below lightspeed and had colonised a bunch of other planets already.
Good book series, by the way.
