You Americans have to pay £4.46 to cross bridges?! What kind of stupid shit is that?
It's up to the state if they want to charge it or not. Most of the time it goes towards road maintenance funds. It's something I wish Michigan would do more of. Our roads are absolute shit.
I never understood toll roads and bridges. Surely that is what taxes pay for?
At least in my state all of the toll roads are privately owned. Taxes won't pay for them because the state doesn't own them. However, some toll roads and bridges elsewhere are publicly owned.
all this investigation probably cost taxpayers more than what the cabbie ducked, and for what?
To punish him for forcing taxpayers to pick up the bill for what was probably an expensive bridge project? To serve as a warning that tolls are not optional? I get that a lot of posters on this forum love people exploiting the government but seriously would you guys cheer on tax evasion too? Those tolls exist for a reason, road and bridge construction is paid for by the state and it's up to them to recoup the costs through either tolls or tax.
I want to make a Cash Cab joke but I seriously can't think of one.
I heard the idea of the tolls was to pay off the bridge and then they were to go away. They got greedy with the money and kept the tolls.
FYI, average cost of prisoner is 40kish a year. (60k in nys, 90k in nyc So this guy evaded 28k in tolls and now going to suck 420k additionally trying to feed his family. Gg, why don't we Just give him the 60k a year to feed his family instead. This guy when he gets out of jail is going to hate the government and police.

Nearly eight dollars to cross a bridge. On top of that he pays a Road tax to the state in order to pay for the maintenance of roads already. Why should he be paying a toll for a road that should be maintained by the taxes he already pays.
Aren't tolls to be paid by the passenger? Why would he avoid them if he had a passenger?
Aren't tolls to be paid by the passenger? Why would he avoid them if he had a passenger?
If he's returning with no passenger.
Christ. Whats with NYC cities high prices and no rule of law? The bridge costs that much and he gets years for avoiding it? An example of no rule of law. http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2014/02/20/mayors-suv-speeding/5663649/
We have a system in South Florida here where we have a lane or two that you can pay to use or use the general traffic lanes, which are always more clogged, which provides a speedier alternative if you're willing to pay the money. The kicker? If you are using a type of 'green' vehicle (it's something the state decides I do believe), then you get in free. It promotes less carbon dioxide emissions, so it's pretty cool.
Garbage. All that does is make Prius drivers act smug even though they own a shitbox. [editline]21st April 2014[/editline]
Just noticed that every single post except for this guy is by a gold member. Apparently we're the only ones here who give a shit about roads :v:
Are you honestly defending these shitty tolls? I give a shit about roads, but I don't like to pay for things I already pay for with taxes; the price of some of these tolls is ludicrous.
It's modern day highway robbery. Stand and deliver, or face fines and/or jail time.
Ok, so if he's a cabbie, and he's driving people around, why isn't the passenger responsible for the toll as part of their fare?
That's a sizable chunk of his income, they really don't make that much especially with the ever rising cost of fuel. Perhaps there should be some sort of toll discount for those who drive for a living. With how much he would have to shell out of his already meager pay on top of income tax I think it's fair for him to be upset about that. When you feel you're getting unfairly treated and you're one man then you do what you can to make ends meet. Not saying this was right of him but I don't doubt he felt justified in what he did, and I hope something good comes from the attention this is getting. Prison is entirely unnecessary, it's not like he isn't going to get fined to oblivion regardless.
One of my filthy commie but genius professors apparently never pays the tolls because it conflicts with his beliefs, and also supposedly never gets fined for it. He also carried a brick in his backpack for when he got bullied in elementary school.
Kill someone in self defence? LIFE Kill someone intentionally? 15 years Rape someone? 5-10 years Pirate? 15+ years Dodge toll booths? 7 years! The justice system is all over the place.
I heard the idea of the tolls was to pay off the bridge and then they were to go away. They got greedy with the money and kept the tolls.
Well they do have the maintenance of the bridge to worry about. Don't want that shit falling apart or anything right? And if NYC don't have some form of tax for road maintenance, they're going to keep the tolls (tolls are literally the dumbest fucking thing).
7 years in prison? why would prison even be of any benefit to someone who evades toll booths to save money
Up to 7 years in prison.

I severely dislike toll booths and paid parking. I parked my car in a Milwaukee parking lot for 1 hour and it was $5.
I don't think any rational person here is saying that he should just get off scott-free, even if the toll is stupid everyone else has to pay them and so should he, but prison is no place for a toll-dodger.
That much money in two years? How much are these tolls, exactly?
If it's $28k in 3k trips, that means about $9 a toll.
That much money in two years? How much are these tolls, exactly?
If we divide 28240 by 3000, it approximates to $9,5. How much in real?
You Americans have to pay £4.46 to cross bridges?! What kind of stupid shit is that?
This bullshit is relegated to fuckton-huge cities like NYC. Here in Atlanta, there was only one toolbooth on the roads leading from the city to the perimeter highway and even they were recently put out of commission.
I know but I just don't see how this constitutes going to the same place as a rapist for longer than the rapist does in some cases.
because we live in a society where the worth of a human life is measured in dollars
Aren't tolls to be paid by the passenger? Why would he avoid them if he had a passenger?
pocketed the difference probably.
