The key here is the "being asked to stop" which implies that the person made it known that he does not like what is happening, why should someone have the right to harass someone?
Maybe because that applies anywhere, and I'm pretty sure all the other places that it's illegal to harass people in, don't ban words.
I don't suppose you'd mind explaining why?
because limiting free speech in any capacity is a slippery slope to total censorship and the invoking of thought police, and eventually you'll end up living in a society where people are afraid to speak their minds or face imprisonment or death
Are you saying harassment should be illegal? That's as much of an infringement on free speech as banning a word is. Because then you have people dictating what is right, what is wrong, what is really harassment... it's dangerous.
Harassment is illegal.
yes if they're stalking you that's different, but if you say "stop saying that :(" it doesn't mean the person need immediately stop or face jail time
No, not jail time for something like that. A small fine, if anything. I was mainly talking about actively finding people just to offend them for juvenile and illogical reasons.
Maybe because that applies anywhere, and I'm pretty sure all the other places that it's illegal to harass people in, don't ban words.
I suppose you're right, the words used are irrelevant, but I'm just saying that mean words shouldn't be 100% protected, but I suppose harassment is illegal anyway so the words don't matter.
No, not jail time for something like that. A small fine, if anything. I was mainly talking about actively finding people just to offend them for juvenile and illogical reasons.
your reasoning is so arbitrary and lacking in logic i can't understand why you're still standing by this position you just keep going "WELLLL YEAHHHH but what about if:"
I suppose you're right, the words used are irrelevant, but I'm just saying that mean words shouldn't be 100% protected, but I suppose harassment is illegal anyway so the words don't matter.
Like I said, it's Israel, the home of the Jews, those guys who were oppressed a few decades ago. Looks to me like they're turning the tables, and repressing their people, and oppressing Palestine.
your reasoning is so arbitrary and lacking in logic i can't understand why you're still standing by this position you just keep going "WELLLL YEAHHHH but what about if:"
Look, I'm gonna outline my position here because I think we're saying similar things, but I'm not communicating them right: I'm perfectly fine with the usage of every word there is, so long as they aren't used to hurt people. In which case the words are still fine to use. In all other cases all words are still fine to use. I don't want any words censored, I just don't want people hurt based on flawed reasoning. If the reasoning behind the hurting is good, then it can continue.
because limiting free speech in any capacity is a slippery slope to total censorship and the invoking of thought police, and eventually you'll end up living in a society where people are afraid to speak their minds or face imprisonment or death
LOL. Who exactly does this benefit? I mean in the grand scheme of things, who exactly would be pushing for these laws to be implemented?
LOL. Who exactly does this benefit? I mean in the grand scheme of things, who exactly would be pushing for these laws to be implemented?
the people in power who would undoubtedly be exempted from such a law?

I mean in the grand scheme of things, who exactly would be pushing for these laws to be implemented?
the point is that you should never let this even be a possibility. 99.9% chance this will never happen, but you shouldn't expect your politicians to think in your best interests and uphold your rights in the first place. the fact that hitler ever rose to power is a testament to the fact that insane abuse of power WILL take place if it is allowed
yup, still stupid
Can you please say why next time so I don't have to ask every time you post?
yup, still stupid the point is that you should never let this even be a possibility. 99.9% chance this will never happen, but you shouldn't expect your politicians to think in your best interests and uphold your rights in the first place. the fact that hitler ever rose to power is a testament to the fact that insane abuse of power WILL take place if it is allowed
I think with the recent legislation being proposed in the US we're pretty clearly at a point where Congressmen rarely uphold the interests of their constituency, and rather the people who line their pocket.
Can you please say why next time so I don't have to ask every time you post?
because all you do is just keep posting "WELL I DONT WANT THE WORD TO BE BANNED BUT IF SOMEONE USES IT IN A WAY I DONT LIKE THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED" which is essentially an equivalent to making the word illegal anyway. you haven't done anything to explain your position in a way that doesn't end in people getting in trouble for speaking their minds in a way you disagree with, so no matter what any of your posts thus far have said, they are all stupid [editline]10th January 2012[/editline]
I think with the recent legislation being proposed in the US we're pretty clearly at a point where Congressmen rarely uphold the interests of their constituency, and rather the people who line their pocket.
i think someone in the NDAA thread said "cmon guys who cares if they can arrest you indefinitely for nothing? they'll never do it unless you do something bad!!!" isn't that like the textbook definition of naivety
Does Germany still do this shit too?
the people in power who would undoubtedly be exempted from such a law?
Yes but how are they at all benefiting from this? I mean I can at least picture why the super evil zionist conspiracy wants your money and to get in power sure, but what are they gaining from this?
I think with the recent legislation being proposed in the US we're pretty clearly at a point where Congressmen rarely uphold the interests of their constituency, and rather the people who line their pocket.
No they are very clearly representing the interests of their constituency.
Does Germany still do this shit too?
i think public expression of nazi symbols that aren't used educationally is still illegal, but you can still discuss nazis freely afaik
i think someone in the NDAA thread said "cmon guys who cares if they can arrest you indefinitely for nothing? they'll never do it unless you do something bad!!!" isn't that like the textbook definition of naivety
you just fucking know that the day the government actually uses the NDAA it will cause a huge uproar. [editline]10th January 2012[/editline]
i think public expression of nazi symbols that aren't used educationally is still illegal, but you can still discuss nazis freely afaik
You remember CR4NK! from Darkland? he asked me to change my avatar on steam when it was a swastika once because the government could arrest him if they found the image of the swastika
Yes but how are they at all benefiting from this? I mean I can at least picture why the super evil zionist conspiracy wants your money and to get in power sure, but what are they gaining from this?
the thread is about censorship, not conspiratorial exaggeration and naive trust in your government
because all you do is just keep posting "WELL I DONT WANT THE WORD TO BE BANNED BUT IF SOMEONE USES IT IN A WAY I DONT LIKE THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED" which is essentially an equivalent to making the word illegal anyway. you haven't done anything to explain your position in a way that doesn't end in people getting in trouble for speaking their minds in a way you disagree with, so no matter what any of your posts thus far have said, they are all stupid
I see your point, but there's a lot of reasons not to like people being verbally assaulted.
Does Germany still do this shit too?
No. Nazi isn't a banned word but Sieg Heil is. Also, swastikas can be shown in public for comedy or art i.e. movies.
I see your point, but there's a lot of reasons not to like people being verbally assaulted.
yeah and i don't particularly like some of your posts either, that doesn't mean i'm going to ask for your arrest or to have you pay a fine people are bigots and rude cunts, but it's something you have to deal with. i'd much rather have to ignore nazi sympathizers than be afraid to say something about nazis that my government doesnt approve of
yup, still stupid the point is that you should never let this even be a possibility. 99.9% chance this will never happen, but you shouldn't expect your politicians to think in your best interests and uphold your rights in the first place. the fact that hitler ever rose to power is a testament to the fact that insane abuse of power WILL take place if it is allowed
The fact that they allow the use of the word for educational purposes shows that it's not just a blind censorship for the sake of it IMO. It makes sense from a practical standpoint given that the holocaust was kind of a big deal and I'm sure many people there were at least somehow connected to it. Limiting trivializing use of it by extremist groups serves to reduce potentially violent disputes over the subject. If there are any further laws pushed to censor free speech, by all means that should be protested, but this one does make sense, maybe not the wording of the law itself but the intent.
yeah and i don't particularly like some of your posts either, that doesn't mean i'm going to ask for your arrest or to have you pay a fine
But my posts aren't at anyone else's expense, or at least they have reasoning behind them. I don't spend five minutes typing streams of "lol shitcunts", I at least put in a simile of thought into my posts. Though this is bound to turn into semantics and other boring subjective things anyway, so imma go sleep
the fact that hitler ever rose to power is a testament to the fact that insane abuse of power WILL take place if it is allowed
More than half of Germany supported him.
Oh this should be good!
More than half of Germany supported him.
It was pretty much like after 9/11. Many people supported the war on terror. Germany had alot of problems back then an most people started voting extremist parties because they wanted a leader when the country was in deep shit and on the edge of a civil war.

They were a people used to a dictatorship, and Hitler had the perfect scapegoat to gain the peoples support.
The jews weren't really the main reason why people voted for hitler.
