We need to mobilize our gays to keep the pedophiles sexually content and away from our children.
Gays are more likely to bed pedophiles.
And atheists lack morals usually.
So straights are more likely to be van pedophiles?

Igoring all those people who justify their hate and death threats with religion.
Sadly this will likely not make life easier for gay people in the BSA. Sure they can now be openly gay, but that isn't goign to mean people at the troop level will actually accept it. I feel sad for any scout who gets out of the closet with their scouting peers but ends up having to quit due to bullying/looked down upon/seen as a black sheep.
As far as my troop goes, the religion thing isn't heavily looked into. They mostly don't care what you believe in, just that you believe in something that you can be reverent/loyal twoards. My scout leader was buddhist for example, and I don't think everyone in my troop was super religious or anything. That said, the religion thing still held some water - some people thought you were weird if you didn't believe in anything, and one of the reasons why I didn't go for eagle was because I didn't feel like lieing about my lack of a religion in a 2+ hour interview process (up to that point though it wasn't an issue).

Name fits.
Good. When I was in the boy scouts it was a fantastic experience, for the most part. Hell, from the two scout masters I had, both of their son's were atheists and were still high ranking guys in the troop. Didn't have any gays, but I don't think it would have been an issue considering most people in the troop were fairly liberal, and all of the kids in my troop patrol had known each other since we were tigers in the cub scouts, so pretty much all of our lives :v:
"The Boy Scouts of America maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God. In the first part of the Scout Oath or Promise the member declares, ‘On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law.’ The recognition of God as the ruling and leading power in the universe and the grateful acknowledgment of His favors and blessings are necessary to the best type of citizenship and are wholesome precepts in the education of the growing members."
that's pretty much a ban for scouts
also their bylaws section one http://www.scouting.org/scoutsource/GuideToAdvancement/Appendix/CharterAndBylaws.aspx

It may not be enforced, but it is a written policy and if you were to say to BSA corporate (not the best term but w/e) "hey buds i'm atheist/agnostic", or said it during the eagle scout board you'd probably get kicked out or fail to get eagle scouted, respectively.
Do half of the people in this thread who are Boy Scouts live in the middle of the bible belt or something? I've never even encountered a troop that had anywhere close to a problem with religion. There's even awards and medals for religions such as Buddhism. I've never met a single person in any troop that cared if someone was an atheist. I know plenty of people that made eagle while being an open atheist. Then again this is California and there aren't many Mormons around here to begin with.

Hell, I go to a Mormon scout troop in northern Utah, and even they wouldn't give a quarter of a shit. They would probably try to get you to go to church, but that's pretty much it.

SUGAR LAND, TX—Shortly after reports surfaced today that the Boy Scouts of America had voted to lift its ban on gay youths, local homosexual child Max Lovell, 14, told reporters that he was looking forward to joining the organization and finally being ridiculed for another thing. “This is great. I get made fun of every day for being gay, but now I’ll be called a dork, too,” said the enthusiastic Lovell, who is routinely taunted for being homosexual but will now endure everything from light ribbing to vicious name-calling based on his affiliation with the outdoor-preparedness youth group.
