what does this have to do with feminism at all?

"Facebook is a significant social force and it gives quite a worrying picture of how they view women if breastfeeding is considered obscene and rape is not."
damn feminists, stop wanting positive influences and protesting hurtful cultural narratives
People joke about serious matters every single day, it's only when rape is involved that people starts going up in arms.
Death is marginalized along with war, disease, genocide, racism and the such along with rape. Humans always like to share a good laugh no matter the subject.
feminists ruin all my fun
one mention of one student with slightly feminist tendencies and suddenly "oh my god bloody feminists ruing all the fun". she's no more feminist than me or anyone else who isn't a bigoted chauvinist also, how are the feminist tendencies shown here bad in any way? sure she should lighten up because the page is just a joke... but yeh HOW DARE she notice what is clearly an injustice, whether you appreciate the joke or not
i could see if it was a funny joke worthy of defense but it's pretty crap. george carlin has made better jokes about rape.
i'm not defending the joke. i'm not offended by it but then again it's an utterly shite joke so i don't care either way, banned group or not i'm not defending the daft student crying her eyes out about the shite joke either though - i'm just defending feminism
Free speech does not mean you should speak; this is disgusting.
Aahaha no It's a joke and it wasn't meant to be literal; people lie on the internet all the fucking time.
What makes you the joke supervisor? Do you have a Ph.D in Humor? Hell, do you even have your Masters in Laughter?
yes i am actually a joke supervisor and i have both those degrees.
Aahaha no It's a joke and it wasn't meant to be literal; people lie on the internet all the fucking time.
Bullshit, it is a well known fact that most of the internet consists of people who are well known for telling the truth. Why just last week I discovered that 43 people all stood in front of the tanks at Tienanmen sq and a further 3 are Elvis.
I can just imagine someone join that group only to have their entire family suddenly hate them because unbeknown to them, a family member had been raped.
I saw a hurtful word on the Internet that has pratcally no meaning so I decided to waste everybody's time by staging how important it is that we are completely heart torn by it. I'm not saying it should be taken down, but joking about rape allows people to have a sense of flippancy about it. Rape really isn't taken as a serious matter by lots of people. For example if you make a homophobic remark or a joke about 9/11 on Facepunch you'll see people up in arms for pages about it. Even people who made jokes about Steve Jobs' and other people's deaths have been banned for it. Yet there's been only a few people in this thread who see rape jokes as offensive - despite insistence that rape is a pretty horrible reality in society. I think if you're going to make it light hearted in nature it isn't just going to go away, it becomes more culturally acceptable.
People are too fucking sensitive. It's a facebook page based on a crude joke. The only reason it has so many likes is because its FUNNY. Man society needs to get a grip.
People who get offended by jokes like this need to lighten up. A joke doesn't hurt anyone.
I was thinking that it was a page literally on the topic of rape, like there is a page for singing and such. That's a bit understandable. But this? No. It's ridiculous for them to be acting so immature about it.

Part of the reason people are against rape jokes is because it's not really something society takes seriously. Rapists are barely every prosecuted; if they are, it's even rarer for them to be convicted. Estimates vary, but around 1 in 4 women will be raped or sexually assaulted in their lifetime, but the rate of conviction is lower than basically any other crime you can think of. It's pretty much the only crime in which the victim will have to prove that they did not deserve to have it inflicted on them. If you're raped and you've ingested alcohol that night, or wore a short skirt, you're not going to win even if there's hard evidence, basically. A woman in the US lost her case against her rapist because she was wearing skinny jeans, and it was decided that the jeans were so tight that she would 'have had to have' helped him take them off. Hell, an 11 year old girl was gang-raped earlier this year, and the New York Times wrote that the offenders 'would have to live with it for life', and indicated that it was her fault. We all know that 9/11 and the Holocaust are serious things because we're taught so by society from the get-go, but many studies show that a horrifying high number of young men in western societies think rape is perfectly acceptable (we studied this in Criminology; I can dig up stats if necessary). Rape jokes just continue to trivialize the matter, which is why it's a lot worse than joking about those other things.

I don't get why people tell rape victims to get over it. It's not that easy, you know.

If a girl is drunk and acting flirtatious and people witness that, it is a lot more likely in a juries mind that the girl was consenting at the time of the act. I knew a guy who was accused of rape because the girl was drunk, had (consenting)sex with the guy, and later made the accusation because she had a boyfriend. Now, I'm not saying with 100% certainty that the guy I knew was telling the truth, or the girl was lying, but shit like that does happen. How do you prove rape in these cases? Our definition of justice is that the person must be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. How can you, in good conscience, convict someone who you are not sure beyond a reasonable doubt committed the crime? The problem isn't just the trivialization of rape, but the fact that it is just so fucking hard to prove if there aren't any witnesses to the act.

Obviously that's a big problem when a great deal of people love to get trashed and have casual sex.
Yea, so what happens when two people are drunk and have sex? Is it mutual rape?
of course not men can't be raped :downs:
