People just prefer the taste of sugars and meat. This kind of stuff is also easy to produce and has been made cheaper by alot of businesses.
Indeed! But people who think they are eating healthy (and enjoying it) are usually just eating sugary crap that can be worse than conventional unhealthy foods.
You don't have to but, it gets boring very fast, doesn't taste all that great, and isn't filling for long.
all these things are filling for much longer than the potato, white flour, and fructose found in most junk food. and if it gets boring then you buy new vegetables and nuts. we are incredibly fortunate to be living in a time where i can eat fruits and vegetables from around the world in season and out of season.
A box of Kraft Dinner costs the same as a head of lettuce. The former is unhealthy but can feed three people. The latter is healthy but can really only be used as a component in something else. (And used in something like salads will still only be enough for 4 or 5 people) Basically anything in the processed foods aisles is cheaper and faster than buying meat/vegetables/pasta and making the equivalent yourself.
Shame, the average price of groceries is so damn expensive here. Except maybe when its on sale. The reason why people go for fried food is because you could cook like shitload of food in a pot of oil. Like frozen fries. And you can keep the oil and reuse it, saving cost, although not a healthy option.

I can buy a bag of sphaghetti|pasta and some frozen or fresh vegs for the equivalent of a one person portion of such a craft diner. With the difference that that pasta and veg will feed a family of four on one dinner and is healthier to boot. Throw in a little bit of bacon|fish|chicken and you don't get a significantly more expensive meal which also includes meat stuff. Both instant stuff, ready made stuff and fast food is actually incredibly expensive here; compared to ingredients but people still buy it in droves.

I wonder how the people will react to the tax change. I lived a good chunk of my life in Mexico and I know that junk food plays a big role in a lot of people's lives.
pass this in canada so i can exercise my thin privilege to the fullest extent
Where do you live because a box of kraft dinner is literally 75 cents here (maybe a bit over a dollar if you buy a box individually)
Here kraft macaroni cheese is ~£2, with which you could buy 2kg of pasta and have some money spare. A block of cheese is just a couple of quid and would do a good number of meals too.
They also approved a tax for owning pets As far as I'm concerned this is a bunch of BS :/
Another problem is that while I believe knowing to cook yourself will be cheaper in the long run and also not that time consuming thanks to buying in bulk and things like slow cookers, impoverished areas don't always have supermarkets that have fresh food available. They have bodegas and quickly marts that often barely have anything fresh that is edibile aside from apples. Canned vegetables aren't inherently unhealthy but they don't always taste good.
This. Stop saying junk food is cheaper it's simply not true.
this issue is much more complicated than a lot of you make it out to be. compare the time it takes to buy, prepare, and eat a healthy meal with enough calories to the time it takes to buy and eat an unhealthy meal with the same amount of calories. this is why poor people are unhealthy, because they don't have the time or energy to prepare healthy food. it's not a matter of "they're too LAZY to make it and they have bad eating habits!!" it's that in a lot of cases they can't.
Canned food can be incredibly healthy and cheap.
Excuse me, what? All that salt is a death sentence for people with high blood pressure. [t]http://c2.soap.com/images/products/p/dcs/dcs-717b_2z.jpg[/t]
Healthy food is actually cheaper. People prefer junk food because you don't need to cook it
Yea cause corn syrup and starch cost so much to process right?
